Today we launched our @Action4SA 2026 Local Government Election Manifesto. It’s a big document, but the message is actually quite simple: local government must work. People shouldn’t have to fight their municipality for the basics. Water in the taps. Electricity that works. Potholes fixed. Sewage dealt with. Refuse collected. And when something goes wrong, you should be able to report it, track it and know when it will be fixed. If we expect people to pay for services, then we must get their bills right. Those who genuinely cannot afford basic services must be supported. Those who can pay must pay. We also have to fix what happens inside our municipalities. Hire people because they can do the job, not because they know the right politician. Fill critical vacancies. Set proper performance standards. And when people repeatedly fail to do their jobs, there must be consequences. The same goes for corruption. Don’t announce another investigation and then forget about it. Follow the money. Act on the findings. Deal with corrupt officials and suppliers. And where residents’ money has been stolen, fight to get it back. We are also clear about the rule of law. Enforce our by-laws. Protect infrastructure. Deal with hijacked and dangerous buildings. Get municipal law enforcement doing what it is supposed to do. And on illegal immigration, we are equally clear. Immigration enforcement is primarily a national responsibility, but that cannot become an excuse for municipalities to look the other way. Where municipal operations identify suspected immigration violations, we will work with Home Affairs, SAPS and the relevant authorities, refer those cases and follow them through. Different responsibilities cannot become an excuse for doing nothing. Then there is the economy. Municipalities cannot create every job, but they can certainly make it unnecessarily difficult to create one. We want less red tape, quicker approvals and municipalities that work with entrepreneurs, small businesses and investors rather than frustrating them. And our own councillors must be held to the same standard. Show up. Be accessible. Report back. Follow up. Do the work. But one of the parts of the manifesto that stands out for me is the compact between government and residents. Government must do its job. Residents must play their part. That means those of us in government cannot keep demanding more from residents while delivering less. But it also means those who can pay must pay. We must protect the infrastructure we all depend on, keep our communities clean, obey the law and reject corruption. Government delivers. Residents play their part.
