Nobody like him then.
Nobody like him since.
Being a Pennsylvania boy I've naturally heard something of Thorpe while growing up but nothing, nothing of which compares to what I'm sharing with You here. Dad used to tell me stories of him running several miles from Carlisle PA. to a track meet then after running back.
The town that took his name is in the Poconos—originally Mauch Chunk and East Mauch Chunk. They merged in 1954, the year of my birth, the year after he died, and voted to rename themselves Jim Thorpe to lure his remains there. His sons wanted him buried back in Oklahoma near his people, but the town made a deal with his widow and built a memorial. It's still there on a hill overlooking the Lehigh River.
The big local news is the Jim Thorpe Memorial Hall reopening last October 2022 after nearly a decade of work. It now houses the borough offices, police department, and community space all under one roof. There's also a fresh push this month to get the IOC to list him as the sole gold medalist instead of co-champion.
Jim Thorpe won Olympic golds in the pentathlon and decathlon in 1912, played pro football and baseball, and was voted the greatest athlete of the first half of the twentieth century. The medals got stripped over some minor-league baseball pay, you'll hear about in the video, they were restored decades later.
Born Wa-Tho-Huk—"Bright Path"—in 1887 near Prague, Oklahoma, he was Sac and Fox with Potawatomi, Menominee, Kickapoo, Irish, and French roots.
At Carlisle Indian Industrial School, his brother died from abuse there, he became a two-time All-American in football, then dominated the 1912 Stockholm Olympics—winning gold in both the pentathlon and decathlon, setting a decathlon world record despite mismatched shoes after his were stolen.
King Gustav V called him the greatest athlete in the world.
Months later a newspaper exposed his minor-league baseball pay of about twenty-five dollars a week, and under the era's strict amateur rules he was stripped of his medals and records in 1913.
He went on to play six seasons of Major League Baseball and nine in pro football, became the first president of what became the NFL, and was voted the greatest athlete of the first half of the twentieth century in 1950.
The medals were eventually returned to his family in 1983, and in 2022 the IOC finally restored him as the sole gold medalist in both events.
Later life brought financial struggles, broken marriages, and bit parts in Hollywood, but his legend only grew nomatter what.
He married three times and had eight children—four with his first wife Iva Miller, four sons with his second wife Freeda Kirkpatrick. After his playing days ended around age forty, he struggled with odd jobs, bit parts in over sixty Hollywood films, and alcoholism, dying of a heart attack in a trailer in Lomita, California in 1953.
His family fought for decades to bring his remains back to Oklahoma, but a Pennsylvania town renamed itself Jim Thorpe and keeps his grave to this day.
In his final years he also pushed Hollywood to cast actual Native Americans instead of whites with makeup.

"Indio Thorpe en Olimpiada; Piel Roja de Carlisle Competirá por Lugar en el Equipo Estadounidense", refirió el New York Times, en una nota discriminatoria desde cualquier punto de vista, cuando Jim intentaba llegar a los juegos olímpicos de Estocolmo.
A los 16 años, Thorpe, ingresó a la Escuela Industrial Indígena de Carlisle, Pensilvania. Representó a los EE. UU. en los Juegos Olímpicos de 1912, ganando dos medallas doradas: una en decatlón y la otra en pentatlón. Era una estrella del futbol americano profesional y miembro del salón de la fama de ese deporte. Jugó béisbol en las ligas mayores durante seis temporadas. Destacaba además en natación, hockey sobre hielo, boxeo, tenis, arquería e incluso baile de salón.
El periódico Telegram & Gazette, de Worcester, Massachusetts, editado por la empresa dueña del The New York Times, publicó una investigación según la cual Thorpe había recibido dinero por jugar béisbol en 1909 y 1910. El diario acusaba al piel roja de haber cobrado un par de dólares por cada partido jugado.
Como consecuencia de ello, en una época en la que el espíritu olímpico era puramente amateur, el Comité Olímpico Internacional le retiró sus dos medallas por haber participado en partidos de béisbol profesionales. Jim, no tuvo nadie que le protegiera salvo él mismo.
En su defensa alegó: “espero ser parcialmente perdonado por el hecho de que yo simplemente era un muchacho indio y no sabía nada de estas cosas. De hecho, yo no sabía que estaba haciendo algo malo, ya que sólo estaba haciendo lo que muchos otros universitarios habían hecho, excepto que ellos no usaron sus nombres”.
El caso de Jim Thorpe, fue y es calificado en todo el mundo como una de las injusticias más grandes cometidas por el Comité Olímpico Internacional contra un atleta. El atropello a los logros del piel roja de Carlisle se dio en parte también porque el racismo en los Estados Unidos estaba muy marcado en aquellos años. Aquellos colores que defendió, aquella sociedad dominante a la que representó en una justa olímpica se negaron a defenderle. Un súper atleta discriminado por ser piel roja.
El gran Jim Thorpe, terminó sus días deshecho por el alcohol. En 1950 le fue diagnosticado cáncer en los labios, no tenía para pagar un hospital, murió en una casa rodante en California en 1953. Tenía 64 años de edad.
Treinta años después de su muerte, en una ceremonia en Los Ángeles a la cual asistieron dos de sus ocho hijos, el Comité Olímpico Internacional le devolvió sus medallas de oro… Con él se arrepintieron demasiado tarde.
Suspendidos por ambas guerras mundiales; utilizados como parte del régimen de propaganda de Adolfo Hitler en Berlín 1936; boicoteados en varias ocasiones; manchados por el terrorismo en Múnich 1972 y Atlanta 1996; en un mundo impregnado hasta los huesos de política a veces de altos vuelos y a veces muy barata, ni los mismísimos juegos olímpicos se salvan de ser sacudidos por sus vaivenes y también, por la incomprensión de muchos seres humanos insensibles.
