#JOBSDAY UPDATE: September's job numbers just dropped, and tells us a bad overall picture: our labor market is weaker than 4.2% unemployment suggests.
Our labor market is facing some extreme challenges, such as the fact that men continue to fall behind women in employment growth, as seen on the graph.

September #JobsDay numbers show job growth has slowed with payrolls rising by only 29,000. Unemployment rose slightly to 4.2%, and payrolls were revised down by 60,000 for the months of July and August. (1/7)
August #JobsDay numbers show job growth reversed its drop from last month with payrolls rising by 162,000. Unemployment held steady at 4.1%, and payrolls were revised up by 55,000 for the months of June and July. (1/6)
With #JobsDay upon us once again, I wrote about a simple way to put the differentiated needs of families front and center: BLS should add an employment sheet that breaks out the data by age of youngest child.

In a remarkable twist of timing, President Trump's pick to run the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Brett Matsumoto, looks likely to be confirmed today, on #jobsday, 12 months after he fired the last BLS commissioner following an unexpectedly weak jobs report.
#jobsday puzzle: 0.8ppt June drop in prime age Epop. Answers: #QLmonthly data. Layoffs to unemployment rose by almost 50%, and the propensity to exit LF (not count as Unemp.) after layoff rose almost 50%. We still view labor market as stable, see briefing:

Recent job creation in perspective. Trump has averaged 42,000 jobs per month since he started in January 2025, vs. 191,000 for Biden once we regained the pre-pandemic peak in July 2022 and 216,000 in Obama's 2nd term. #jobsday

May #JobsDay numbers show job growth continued with payrolls up by 172K and unemployment steady at 4.3%. Health care/social assistance (47K) continue to boost the labor market, while leisure/hospitality (70K) & local government (55K) saw large payroll growth this month. (1/7)
The April #JobsDay numbers show job growth continued with payrolls up by 115K and unemployment holding steady at 4.3%.
A factor I normally don’t talk about in the report is wages, but I want to highlight what has been happening given affordability concerns. (1/7)
NEW #JobsDay Preview:
@deanbaker13 says don't expect good news this Friday.
Job growth averaged just 8K/month over the last three months, before the Iran war added new pressure.
Restaurants are likely to shed jobs as consumers pull back as manufacturing keeps losing ground.
Health care is the one bright spot?
Unemployment is expected to rise, especially for Black workers and young people.
Wage growth is also slowing and average unemployment spells just hit their longest stretch since 2022.
The big picture is that there's further weakening of the economy, but we're not yet at collapse.
