🔴 Constable's cello, made 1802, to be played publicly for first time in 100 years
The personal cello of British landscape painter John Constable will be performed in public on 10 June after restoration funded by the Friends of Ipswich Museum, which raised £4,000. The instrument was commissioned by Constable and crafted in 1802 by John Dunthorne Sr., his neighbour, mentor, and fellow artist. Dunthorne worked as a plumber, glazier, and carpenter while also painting and making musical instruments.
The cello had been badly restored in 1926 and was unplayable until expert restorers James and Sylvie Fawcett returned it to working condition.
