Please listen to my on air interview with Canadian Army Lt. General Omer Lavoie about a young CAF private Jess Larochelle who on October 14, 2006 earned, yet was ultimately denied the Canadian Victoria Cross, Canada's highest military honour.
Alone in battle against perhaps 40 Taliban, Jess Larochelle horribly wounded was firing two machine guns, including the usual 2-man C6, protecting his remaining fellow Canadians. Two had already died.
Artillery fire had to be directed to within metres of Jess. That's how close Taliban were to him.
General Lavoie was the Canadian commanding officer that day and witnessed Jess Larochelle's incredible bravery directly.
General Lavoie and General Rick Hillier, Canada's former Chief of the Defence Staff, both joined me on my program calling for the Victoria Cross for Jess Larochelle.
I spoke as well with CAF corporal Bruce Moncur who began the campaign for the Victoria Cross for Jess.
What Private Jess Larochelle accomplished on October 14, 2006, would be what you might expect to see portrayed as Hollywood war fiction. It wasn't. It was very real.
Jess underwent many surgeries relating to his wounds from Afghanistan and on August 30, 2023, private Jess Larochelle passed away.
