Hey UD Team, Can you please explain further what this tweet actually means? None of the UD Whales in our group had any clear information on “direct on chain purchases” from https://t.co/MdIilvxoeD.
From an investors perspective, I believe the 2 most important factors when creating value & demand in any market, are scarcity & data. The one constant & true aspect about every market in the world, since the beginning of time, is that all pricing strategies originate from previous sales data. Doesn’t matter if you’re selling cars, boats, houses, bananas, or web domains! The health and growth of all markets literally depends on the ability to access; actual, factual, reliable, consistent, provable sales data.
Unfortunately, UD, after being asked to do so by it’s investors multiple times over the last 5 years, and having 99% of the sales in this market, has never released this data on chain for the entire time UD has been in business. Arguably, helping to encourage the suppression of the value and public perception of not only my investment, but their own company. I find this business practice confusing and most troubling, especially for a Web3 “Unicorn” status company with such outstanding talent and resources.
Now, looking at this short vague post from @mattewegould, it would appear that UD’s proposed solution to prove sales data, is a 3rd party Web2 site where the individual UD user, must not only know about this random site and need to navigate to it on their own(a site that even the UD Whales didn’t even know about), but also be so market savvy and such a supporter of UD that they realize they are the ones that need to take the initiative to prove “on chain sales data” for UD instead of UD doing it themselves. I have to ask, how much data do we really think this 3rd party Web2 site is ever going to generate? Somewhere in the neighborhood of 0.0001% of UD sales would be my guess. I’ll admit, I have not examined the data it’s generated so far, but I’d be shocked if you have more than a dozen domains or more than $200 bought from there. How can this possibly be considered a solution for the biggest issue affecting the secondary UD market and possibly UD themselves? We desperately need every domain sold by UD to be recorded on chain. UD has already squandered 5 years and 11 TLD’s worth of data away while everyone else in the space is proving daily, their worth and value through comparable sales data on the blockchain for all the world to see.
From my perspective, this would seem to not be an accident or an oversight, but appears to be a deliberate decision to not share this data on chain. I know there are credit card issues and not all purchases are completed with crypto, but to my knowledge, none of the crypto purchases at UD are being recorded on chain either. Is this such a difficult problem for UD to solve that 5 years have gone by and this non-solution is the best solution they could come up with? I feel UD had several solid reasons for releasing multiple TLDs, and hopefully, only hurting the scarcity aspect of the market temporarily, but to not address the sales data issue at any point over the last 5 years seems unreasonable and foolish. Can anyone explain why this route was the chosen road? And why it hasn’t been seriously addressed in the last 5 years? I think all UD investors are entitled to a complete comprehensive explanation and a real solution for this, like yesterday.
