In hardware wallet interaction design, input has always been a controversial choice:
-Some products only provide 2 keys (left/right + confirm)
-Some use 5 keys (direction + confirm)
Others rely on touchscreen or virtual input methods
While these approaches look simple, they often sacrifice input efficiency and intuitive user experience.
Limitations of fewer keys
Long operation paths
With only 2 keys, entering a PIN or seed phrase requires constant long/short presses, making the process extremely tedious.
Entering a single word may take dozens of presses.
Lack of intuitiveness
Fewer keys require “secondary mapping” or “scroll-to-select,” which does not align with common input habits.
Users need to relearn new interaction logic, raising the entry barrier.
Forced function merging
Functions like Scan, Bluetooth, and Confirm are often hidden in secondary menus or rely on key combinations.
This makes them less intuitive and more prone to user error.
KeyPal 2’s Choice: 15 Physical Keys
KeyPal 2 adopts a T9 keypad layout similar to classic feature phones:
-Number keys 1–9 (with ABC/T9 text input mapping)
-Function keys: Scan, Bluetooth, Back
-Confirm (OK) key
-Cancel/Return key
-Independent Power key
In total, the operation area provides 15 physical keys.
Design Intentions
Close to user habits – T9 keypad is one of the most widely used input methods, requiring almost no learning curve.
Smooth experience – Entering PINs, Passphrases, or wallet names feels natural and efficient.
Higher input efficiency – Numeric PINs can be entered directly without scrolling left/right.
Better seed phrase input – Inputting seed phrases, Passphrases, and wallet names is far faster than on 2-key or 5-key designs.
Direct access to functions – Dedicated keys for Bluetooth, Scan, and Confirm (OK) avoid secondary menus, keeping operations intuitive.
Reduced error risk – Clear physical key assignments minimize mistakes caused by hidden key combos or long-press operations.
📷 KeyPal 2: QR Code Scanning
Today, we’re introducing the brand-new QR code scanning feature of #KeyPal2.
(KeyPal 2 also supports Bluetooth interaction, but today we’ll focus on the implementation of QR code scanning.)
1. EIP-4527 Standardized QR Code Scanning Protocol Support：
This means when initiating transfers or contract interactions from the #KeyPal2 wallet address in TokenPocket App, you only need to scan with the camera to securely transmit transaction data to the hardware wallet for signing — with no physical connection required.
2. Network Coverage：
QR code scanning will soon be available on multiple networks, including: Bitcoin, Ethereum (EVM ecosystem), Solana, Tron, and more.
3. Simple Technical Analysis：
a. Data Serialization & Compression Encoding: Transaction data will be serialized into Cbor on the mobile app and encoded into binary data (Ur-bytes) optimized for QR code interaction.
b. #KeyPal2 scans the QR code, decodes the Ur-bytes back into Cbor data, and then completes the offline signing.
c. The signature result is then serialized into Cbor and encoded into a QR code in Ur-bytes format for scanning on the mobile phone.
4. The above transaction completes the closed loop of the entire wireless signature transmission in an offline environment:
