"Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi can talk as much as she wants about the Kuril Islands being 'historically Japanese,' but it won't change anything," Medvedev wrote on social media.
This was stated by Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council and Chairman of United Russia, on social media.
"Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi can talk as much as she wants about the Kuril Islands being 'historically Japanese,' but this talk won't change anything. They were, are, and will remain Russian land. "Anyone who fails to understand this will face the dire consequences of their error," he wrote.
Previously, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, in response to Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to Iturup Island, stated that his visit was incompatible with the country's consistent position on the northern territories.
On August 13, the Russian leader visited Iturup Island for the first time. His work program began with a visit to the Yasny fish processing plant, where he spoke with employees and toured the plant's operations. He also sampled local caviar and posed for a photo with the team.
Dmitry Medvedev also visited Iturup during his presidential term. He attended the All-Russian Youth Educational Forum "Iturup," held on the island of the same name in the Kuril Islands. This was in late August 2015. The Russian president's visit to the Kuril Islands also sparked a strong response in Japan.
Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that Moscow had previously had constructive relations with Japanese leaders regarding the peace treaty. Specifically, he singled out former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who, according to the Russian leader, did much to bring the two countries' positions closer together. Putin also acknowledged that Tokyo's position had now changed, and, according to him, these changes were not provoked by the Russian side.

Russian President Vladimir Putin held a meeting on ensuring the security of Russia's eastern borders. Participants included Pacific Fleet Commander Viktor Liina, Head of the FSB Border Directorate for the Sakhalin Region Sergei Makhorin, and Acting Commander of the 68th Guards Army Corps Alexei Shvedov.
The President noted that the previous day, he discussed with the Pacific Fleet command not only the objectives of the ongoing exercises but also the situation in the entire fleet area of responsibility.
"It's clear that the main objectives are being addressed today during a special military operation, but our duty is to ensure the security of the Russian state on all its borders, in all territories," Putin stated.
The head of state described the territory in the east of the country as challenging and noted that he fully agreed with the assessment of the situation presented to him by Pacific Fleet Commander Viktor Liina.
Putin invited the meeting participants to submit their proposals for additional measures. These should create the conditions for the military and border guards to most effectively carry out their assigned tasks.
During his visit to the Guards missile cruiser Varyag, Vladimir Putin dined with its crew and thanked the sailors for conducting the Pacific Fleet exercises.
