Today, a Flag Ceremony was held at #LACoFD Fire Station 171 to honor the legendary life and legacy of trailblazing Fire Chief Robert E. Osby.
Chief Osby dedicated 58 years to public service, breaking racial barriers in 1979 as the first African American Fire Chief for the City of Inglewood. Throughout his historic career, he led departments across California—including San Jose, San Diego, and Oceanside—championing modern recruitment strategies that graduated historic numbers of women and minorities into the fire service.
He and his son, retired LACoFD Fire Chief Daryl Osby, hold the distinct honor of being the only father-son duo to serve as Fire Chiefs of major metropolitan departments in the nation.
Our deepest thoughts, prayers, and condolences go out to his wife Kellie, his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and all who knew and loved him.
Chief Osby’s profound contributions are forever etched into the bedrock of our profession.
He will never be forgotten.
With heavy hearts, the #LACoFD announces the passing of retired Fire Chief John W. Englund on October 8, 2026, at the age of 95.
Following his service in the U.S. Air Force, Chief Englund joined the LACoFD in 1955. Over a dedicated 33-year career, he rose to become our seventh Fire Chief, serving from 1984 to 1988.
As Fire Chief, he overcame major funding challenges to eliminate all Department debt, paving the way to rebuild seven fire stations and construct two new ones. His forward-thinking leadership funded the 9-1-1 Communications Center, introduced the Department’s first Bell 412 twin-turbine helicopter, chaired the FIRESCOPE Board, and established our Family Support Group.
Chief Englund’s visionary legacy permanently shaped our Department. We extend our deepest condolences to his loved ones.
Thank you for keeping the Englund family in your thoughts and prayers. 🚒💔🕊️

FF Lithgoe was last assigned to Fire Station 36 in the City of Carson. He faithfully served our Department, residents, and communities for 22 years.

National impact, local roots! 🌍🚒
The #LACoFD Malibu Forestry Unit welcomed 48 landscape architects from across the US (including CA, OR, WA, NY, and CO) during their annual nationwide conference.
As wildfire safety remains a critical conversation, guests toured our demonstration garden to learn about defensive space landscaping and home hardening. The consensus? A fire-department-run educational space like this is exactly what the industry needs.
Huge thanks to Elisa Read (Studio Pappaterra), the Santa Monica Mountains RCD, the SMM Fire Safe Council, and horticulturalist John Greenlee for making this event a massive success! 🌲✨
