Jamie Carragher (@Carra23) made an interesting point on @WeAreTheOverlap about the influence parents can have on a young player’s development, particularly when support becomes overbearing. “When you’ve got an entourage, maybe it’s the parents… we all know growing up, even at our age, some parents were a nightmare with their kids, or onto coaches about them not getting enough minutes. You look back 20 years later and just think, that didn’t help your son. That didn’t help your kid. Those players, I would say 70–80% of situations where I look at it and think the people around you, or your parents, are a nightmare, hard to deal with, never end up doing what they should do because of the situation.” - End Direct quote - The environment around a young player can influence how they respond to selection, disappointment, reduced minutes, mistakes, feedback and setbacks. Supporting your child and advocating for them is not the problem. • Parents should ask questions. • Coaches should be accountable. • Poor environments should be challenged. Yet, when every setback needs fixing, every selection decision becomes a confrontation, every period on the bench becomes an injustice and every difficult conversation is fought on the player's behalf, what might the young person be losing the opportunity to learn? Carragher’s wider point is that, in his experience, he has seen talented young players surrounded by difficult or overbearing adults who ultimately did not go on to fulfil the potential he believed they had. That does not mean the parent was solely responsible. Player development is far more complex than that, and Carragher’s 70–80% figure is his own observation rather than a research statistic. → At what point does protecting a young player begin to interfere with their development?
