After 15 years in detention, Libyan athletes Tariq Al-Amami and Abdulrahman Al-Barassi have finally returned home.
Their release was coordinated with the Italian 🇮🇹 authorities, and both have now safely arrived in Benghazi after completing all legal procedures.Their story dates back to 2011, when football in Libya came to a halt amid the country's conflict.
Like many young athletes chasing a better future, Al-Amami and Al-Barassi left Libya by boat hoping to reach Italy, pursue professional football in Europe, and escape the war and instability at home.
They were intercepted by the Italian Coast Guard and remained in detention for 15 years without any formal criminal charges, while successive Libyan governments failed to secure their release.
Their return was finally made possible following the intervention and coordination of Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar with the Italian authorities.
