#LeanHogs - Managed money is net short -38,411 contracts: the most bearish reading in at least a decade, 1st percentile (2yr), 0.2nd percentile (10yr, back to 2016), held below the 15th-percentile threshold for 6 straight weeks and still deepening (down another 4,759 contracts last week alone). As recently as March, funds were net long over +120,000 contracts - the swing since then is close to 160,000 contracts in under four months. CME lean hogs are stuck around $92.50-$94.60/cwt, down roughly 17% year-on-year, and have missed the seasonal summer rally entirely. The mechanism: hog and carcass weights haven't come down the way they normally do in summer, so even with slaughter running close to last year's pace (2.402 million head last week, just 31,000 fewer than a year ago), more pork is moving through the system than usual. The wholesale cutout has been soft — it averaged $96.45 last week, down $3.18 on the week — which is exactly what's kept futures pinned below the premium funds would need to justify covering. The catalyst: USDA's #WASDE report, due tomorrow, on July 10, which updates the pork production and carcass-weight outlook that's been anchoring the short. If WASDE confirms heavier weights and rising production, the record short gets validated and hogs have room to keep grinding lower. If the report points to weights easing instead, and a Corn Belt heat wave forecast for next week is already flagged as a potential drag on hog weight gains - a short this size, this deep into record territory, is exposed to a sharp covering rally.
