As already hinted, the combination of intense daytime heating, dry northerly winds, and the later interaction with moist westerlies helped establish a strong wind confluence zone, triggering #Thunderstorm activity along the #LWD line. 🌩️🌬️
As expected, South #Konkan and adjoining parts of South #Maharashtra remained more favourable for convective development during the evening hours.
Accordingly, #Badlapur first baked under extreme #heat, with the temperature soaring to nearly 43°C — making it the #hottest #May day in at least the last 13 years in my observations. 🥵🔥
However, nature had a dramatic plot twist reserved for the evening. 😄
A sudden dust storm swept across the region, bringing gusty winds of nearly 50 km/hr and causing temperatures to crash sharply from around 43°C to nearly 31°C within a short span of time. ⛈️🌬️
The thunderstorm also produced 4.3 mm rainfall, officially opening the May rainfall account for the station. 🌧️ And thus further temp drops to 28c making it coolest spot in #MMR

Back-to-back #WesternDisturbances (WDs) over North #Bharat , along with induced #LWD and #moisture incursion, will trigger the next round of thunderstorms across #Maharashtra between 30 #March and 6th #April (with varying regional impact).
🌡️ #Temperature Outlook:
• Till 2 April: Slightly higher temperatures, but within the normal range
• 3–9 April: Noticeable drop in both maximum and minimum temperatures, with below-normal conditions likely following WD passage

After the intense #Heatwave in the first half of #March, the weather pattern across India is now set for a major shift with back-to-back dipping #WesternDisturbance mid-level troughs.
The current #WD has already displaced the high-pressure area (HPA) over of GJ/RJ.
So a trough linked with a UAC over #Rajasthan/#Gujarat is bringing westerlies into #Maharashtra, activating a low-level wind convergence zone.
This is where easterlies and westerlies meet, triggering #Thunderstorms. This setup already produced isolated thunderstorms over parts of #Kolhapur and #Satara. Such isolated activity may continue until 17 #March, especially over #Marathwada, where convergence will be more favourable.
From 18–20 March, more widespread thunderstorms and possible #Hailstorms may occur across much of #Maharashtra, except #Konkan.
As the WD mid-latitude trough is expected to dip southwards toward #Karnataka latitude, while the line of wind discontinuity shifts west toward the #WesternGhats.
This will trigger storms from the ghat base to the leeward regions of the #Deccan plateau.
Interestingly, the #Marathi Hindu #Shaka #NewYear (1948) on #GudhiPadwa day may begin with rain across the state.
#Temperature outlook (till ~21 March):
🌊 #Konkan Coast: 31–34°C
🌄 Interior Konkan: 34–38°C
This is near normal to slightly below normal for March.
🏞 #Deccan region:
(#Pune–#Nashik–#Sambhajinagar):
Around 34–37°C, but post-17 March rain could drop temps to ~31–33°C.
🌾 #Vidarbha:
Currently 40°C+, expected to fall to 36–38°C, and with rain after 17 March, may further drop to 30–33°C till 21 March.
#Pollution Update:
With the active weather system, meteorological conditions are now favourable for cleaner air quality. Increasing westerly winds in the lower atmosphere (up to ~2 km) are enhancing ventilation.
At the same time, temperature inversion and sinking air are absent, while rising air motion associated with thunderstorm development will further help disperse pollutants.
As a result, visibility will improve with minimal haze, and AQI is likely to remain below 100, indicating good to satisfactory air quality. In areas receiving rainfall, AQI may even drop below 50.
Tentative update: Once these weather disturbances move away after 22 March, temperatures may start rising again.

Many may ask why #Konkan including #Mumbai is mostly missing out on the current rain activity.
At present, the wind convergence zone is favourable from the #Sahyadri ghat base toward the leeward interior of #Maharashtra.
Upper-level winds then steer thunderstorms from west to east once they form.
Because of this, the #Konkan coastal strip remains on the opposite side of the storm formation zone.
So from Mumbai we mostly see cumulonimbus clouds forming on the eastern horizon, which then drift further into the interior.
This is why pre-monsoon activity is currently favouring the #Nashik, #Pune, #Sambhajinagar to #Nagpur belt.
For #Mumbai to receive thunderstorms, a dipping #WesternDisturbance trough is usually needed to trigger convection offshore in the Arabian Sea, which can then drift toward the coast. So the situation needs to be monitored closely, and it may become clearer by 18–19 March around #GudhiPadwa whether Mumbai gets any chance of activity or not.
Meanwhile, some hit-or-miss #Thunderstorm chances may persist along the #Ghat base across #Palghar, #Thane, #Raigad, #Ratnagiri and #Sindhudurg. 🌩️
