Negative Effects of #MARCHINMARCH
The proposed closure of Premier Foods’ fruit-canning plant in Tulbagh is a warning about what happens when business confidence, investment and economic stability are undermined.
South Africa has only two major fruit-canning facilities. Closing Tulbagh would eliminate almost half of the country’s canning capacity.
Between 200 and 220 producers supply the plant, while more than 150 farms could be affected , putting thousands of workers and livelihoods at risk.
More than R200 million has reportedly been invested in the Tulbagh operation over the past three years.
This is precisely the kind of economic reality that #MarchInMarch must confront.
You cannot demand jobs while creating an environment where farmers, businesses and investors are increasingly uncertain about their future.
March for jobs. March for investment. March for farmers. March for workers. March for economic stability.
South Africa needs an economy that attracts investment and protects productive industries , not one that drives them away.
