January maintained a strong production pace, rising by 0.337 million tons year-on-year from last year’s 1.239 million tons. February continued the growth trend with an increase of 95,768 tons, while March marked the first decline, falling short by 10,767 tons compared to last year. Despite the March dip, Q1 (Jan–Mar) production remains robust, totaling 4.237 million tons, up 11.06% (0.422 million tons) from last year. Notably, March production is the lowest in the last three years, indicating the beginning of seasonal pressure. On the trade side, high domestic stocks limited imports, with Malaysia’s palm oil imports during Jan–Mar falling by around 0.1 million tons year-on-year. Interestingly, while CPO production rose by 11%, olein production increased at a slower pace (5.5%), whereas stearin output surged 14%, suggesting higher FFA levels in FFB due to wet weather conditions. Export dynamics turned sharply bullish in March: · Total palm oil exports surged 40.76% (+0.449 million tons) · RBD Olein exports jumped 72.28% from February levels · Overall olein exports rose 72% month-on-month · However, CPO exports declined 17.26%, making it the only segment showing weakness A significant 17% drop in March stocks supported market sentiment, pushing BMD Palm Oil Futures up by around 9.5%. Still, stocks remain elevated at 1.511 million tons, which is: · ~50% higher than last year (1.011 million tons) · Down 28% from December peak (2.122 million tons) · Yet well above the historical March norm of ~1 million tons Market Insight Despite improving exports and falling stocks, Malaysia’s palm oil balance remains relatively heavy, especially in CPO and olein inventories.
