#MyCountry #MyVoice #MyOpinion I couldn’t hold back my tears while listening to this young, bright, responsible, and well-informed citizen speaking on the wishes and fundamentals of the Constitution and about the events that unfolded at Jantar Mantar in Delhi during the NEET protests. Every citizen of India should understand and uphold the values, ideals, and fundamental principles enshrined in the Constitution of India. If we truly embrace its spirit, no force can weaken or divide our nation. A stronger India begins with stronger citizens. When every Indian, irrespective of religion, caste, creed, language, region, or background, is treated with equal dignity and opportunity, the nation itself becomes stronger and more united. To safeguard our democracy, we must remain informed, responsible, and willing to question those in power, regardless of which political party forms the government. Holding governments accountable is not anti-national; it is a democratic duty that strengthens the Republic. Our freedom was built on the sacrifices of countless men and women who gave their blood, their lives, and everything they had to lay the foundations of an independent India. #MyCountry #MyVoice #MyOpinion Democracy, Dissent, and Accountability Over the last few years, I have felt that the Union government, led by the BJP, has increasingly portrayed those who protest against its policies, decisions, alleged failures, or alleged scams as “anti-national” instead of listening to their concerns and addressing them. In a healthy democracy, dissent should be viewed as feedback that can help make the country better, not as something to be discredited. I also believe that major policy decisions, programmes, and legislations should involve meaningful consultation with stakeholders before they are implemented. In a federal system like India, engaging with affected groups and state governments is not just a formality but an important part of democratic governance. Too often, I feel this process has been overlooked. Another concern I have is about the role of sections of the media. I believe the media should hold every government accountable, irrespective of which party is in power. Instead, I often see some outlets questioning the opposition more aggressively while appearing to justify or amplify the government’s narrative, even when it is not necessary. In my view, this weakens the media’s role as an independent watchdog. As far as I remember, the farmers’ protest was one of the few instances where sustained public opposition compelled the Modi government to reverse a major policy decision by repealing the three farm laws. During that movement, many protesting farmers were branded as “Khalistanis,” which I believe shifted attention away from their concerns instead of addressing them. I also find it disappointing that whenever the Modi government is questioned, many BJP supporters and social media handles respond by pointing to the mistakes of previous governments, particularly the UPA, instead of addressing the issue being raised. In my view, the failures of a previous government do not justify the shortcomings of the present one. As the saying goes, two wrongs do not make a right. The BJP came to power by campaigning against corruption, inflation, scams, and what it described as poor governance under the UPA government. However, many of the scams it highlighted during its campaign were not taken to their logical conclusion after it assumed office. However, I believe many people now feel that the party has not been as different from the Congress as they had expected. I also feel that public discourse has increasingly been driven by communal divisions rather than focusing on issues such as science, space, technology, healthcare, employment, innovation, education, and sports, which I believe should receive greater national attention.
