#bioblitz was goldfish. Introduced into the US during the 1800s, they have spread widely. In the wild they can grow to over one foot in size. Most were brassy colored, but some were orange or white. @inaturalist 3/3
A pleasant surprise during the #MallowsBay #bioblitz was several bluespotted sunfish. This tiny, yet attractive native fish is one of our smallest sunfish species. During the breeding season males will be dark & develop bright iridescent spots. @dc_citynature @noaacoastalsci 2/3
Last week the #MallowsBay #BioBlitz was a shocking success. Using an electrofishing boat, we caught 19.5 fish species. A half species because one individual was a hybrid of native Pumpkinseed and non-native Green Sunfish. #CityNatureChallenge @inaturalist @noaacoastalsci 1/3
