There is something deeply appalling about Harry and Meghan returning to the UK, and I cannot help but feel for William, Catherine and their children. This is not simply about two family members coming home. This is the same couple who turned private family grievances into a global media spectacle. Meghan told the world that Catherine made her cry. There were allegations of bullying involving a then three-year-old Princess Charlotte. Meghan’s insinuations about racism were amplified through Omid Scobie’s book, while we were treated to the absurd ripped-jeans meeting, the lip-gloss story and countless other attempts to rewrite the family history through their own narrative. And after all of that, they are coming back. I genuinely wonder what William and Catherine are supposed to feel about this. Imagine having to get on with your lives, raise your children and carry out your duties while knowing that the people who publicly humiliated your family can simply return and once again become a media circus on your doorstep. And whether Charles knew about this or was blindsided by it almost misses the point. The bigger issue is what this says about the monarchy. If Charles had been firmer from the beginning, Harry and Meghan might not have been able to dine off their proximity to the Royal Family for this long. After everything they did to the institution, after the interviews, the accusations, the books, the documentaries and the timing of their attacks during the final years of Prince Philip and the Queen’s life, has everyone simply developed amnesia? Now it is round two. And of course the media will feast on it. Sussex drama is perfect media currency. Every appearance becomes a headline, every interaction becomes speculation, every royal event becomes “Harry and Meghan versus the Royal Family.” The chaos follows them everywhere, and now it is being brought right back to William and Catherine’s doorstep. I cannot imagine what it must be like for the Wales family to have this hanging over them again. Harry and Meghan were never really finished with the Royal Family. They simply ran out of fresh material for a while. Now they are back for another round. And Charles? Well, let’s watch and see what he actually does this time. Maybe grow a backbone.
