Why Japan's Digital ID disaster must now END Fujitsu's access to UK Government Contracts
While the UK debates Digital ID Cards, Japan offers a real-time warning about trusting Fujitsu with critical systems. Their "My Number" National ID System has become a catastrophic failure that's killing public trust and threatening patient safety.
The Scale of Failure: Fujitsu's 'My Number' system regularly issues citizens the wrong official documents - complete strangers' personal details printed at convenience stores. 130,000+ bank accounts linked to wrong people. 940 cases of IDs connected to someone else's bank account entirely.
Life-Threatening Medical Errors: 7,300+ medical records linked to wrong patients. Citizens accessing others' prescription histories. Hospitals pulling up wrong patient data during treatment. Doctors warning the system "could kill patients" due to wrong blood types/allergies being displayed.
Public Revolt: 20,000 Japanese citizens returned their cards in ONE MONTH (June 2023) - unprecedented digital civil disobedience. Only 5% use cards for health insurance despite government pressure. Multiple constitutional lawsuits filed nationwide. Trust has completely collapsed.
Government Rebuke: Japan's Ministry formally condemned Fujitsu's "extremely regrettable" failures, stating "necessary measures had not been taken thoroughly." When diplomatic Japan publicly scolds a contractor, you know it's bad. Yet they remain trapped by vendor dependency.
The UK Connection: This is the SAME Fujitsu behind the Post Office Horizon Scandal - wrongful prosecution of 900+ sub-postmasters, 13+ suicides. You'd think lessons were learned? Think again. Since Horizon gained attention, UK awarded Fujitsu 23 contracts worth £500+ million.
Pattern Recognition: Japan shows this isn't a one-off. It's Fujitsu's standard playbook:
✅ Deliver broken software
✅ Deny systemic problems
✅ Offer hollow apologies when caught
✅ Promise to "do better"
✅ Get next contract anyway Same script, different country.
The Medical Threat: When Doctors warn a government IT system could kill patients through wrong medical records, that vendor should be immediately blacklisted. Instead, Fujitsu faces zero consequences while citizens suffer data chaos and safety risks.
Institutional Capture: How does a company survive such comprehensive failure? "Vendor capture" - they become so embedded that replacing them seems impossible. Civil servants choose "devil you know" over accountability. Performance becomes irrelevant to contract decisions.
The Evidence is Live: Unlike past scandals, we're watching this disaster unfold in real-time. No excuses about "not knowing." Japanese citizens are literally returning government cards in protest while UK continues awarding Fujitsu hundreds of millions.
What Must Happen: Any UK official recommending Fujitsu for future contracts should explain their reasoning in writing. Ministers approving such deals should face Parliamentary questions. The Japanese evidence is unambiguous: this company cannot deliver safe, reliable Government Systems.
Bottom Line: When a vendor's systems are so broken that doctors warn they could kill patients and citizens return government cards en masse, you find a different contractor.
🇯🇵Japan is paying the price for ignoring red flags.
🇬🇧The UK must STOP following suit.
