The Man Who Walked Me Up #Nishani 🌿 Meet Dayanand I had almost forgotten what an easy trek felt like. Then I met Dayanand K Purushothamma. The climb up Nishani Peak in #Madikeri is not short, and my legs let me know it. But with Dayanand walking ahead, pointing out a bird here, a coffee flower there, and cracking a joke every few minutes, the hill somehow felt lighter. He never rushed me. He simply waited at every bend with a smile, as if he had all the time in the world. Somewhere along the climb, I asked him about himself. What he told me stayed with me longer than the view from the top. Dayanand is 46. He studied only till PUC. Then, one day, his father died suddenly in a road mishap, and everything changed. Overnight, a young student became the head of the family. There was a younger brother to raise, a mother to look after, and a home to keep running. The books were put away, and responsibility took their place. He did not tell me this with sadness. He told it the way one talks about a road already travelled, with no complaint and no bitterness. Today, Dayanand wears many hats. He guides trekkers up the hills he knows like the back of his hand. At night, he works as a security guard at a resort. And in between, he tends his two-acre coffee plantation in #Galibeedu, where he also has a beautiful little home among the coffee bushes. The beans do not make him rich, but they bring in a little money and a lot of peace. "Work is work," he seems to say with his easy manner. A guide, a guard, a farmer and he is none of them reluctantly. He does each with the same cheerful heart. His younger brother has grown up. His mother is cared for. His two children go to a good school nearby, which gives him quiet pride. He earns, he spends on his family, and he saves his worries for another day. Life is not all work for him, either. He meets friends and relatives and shares a laugh. When there is a family function, he loads everyone into his van and off they go, the whole family together. As we reached the peak, the clouds opened just enough to show the green hills rolling endlessly below. Dayanand looked at them the way you look at an old friend. "Beautiful, no?" he said. I nodded. But I was thinking about something else. Here was a man with three jobs, a limited education, and a life that began with loss. By any usual measure, he had every reason to be tired and bitter. Yet he was one of the most content people I had ever met. That is the thing about Dayanand. He does not chase happiness. He makes it, every day, out of simple things like a hot meal, a full house, a stranger's smile, a trek made easy for someone else. I went to Nishani hoping to climb a peak. I came back having learned something about how to live. Contentment, I realised, is not about having more. It is about being warm, helping where you can, and finding joy in what you already hold.
