In Dhurandhar, a new entry in Bollywood’s spy genre, the stakes couldn’t be higher. Pakistani agents, aided by a corrupt Indian politician, orchestrate the theft of India’s currency printing plates and smuggle them across the border. The setup is pure cinematic dynamite the idea that enemy forces could flood the economy with flawless counterfeit notes, pushing the nation toward financial collapse. On screen, it feels unnervingly plausible, like lifting coins from a child’s piggy bank without a sound.
Off-screen, though, the premise is pure fantasy. India’s currency production system is a fortress of layered protocols, continuous surveillance, and meticulously trained specialists. Each stage of the process is tightly regulated, leaving almost no room for betrayal or error. The disappearance of official printing plates, undetected or otherwise, belongs squarely in the realm of fiction, a dramatic invention rather than a credible threat.
What makes this conceit fascinating is not its plausibility but its provenance.
In my opinion The Director Raghav Arora or story writer appears to have drawn inspiration, consciously or not, from the Norwegian film Number 24, the acclaimed biographical drama about Gunnar Sonsteby, the legendary resistance fighter known as “Agent No. 24.” In that film, Sonsteby engineers the daring smuggling of Norway’s own banknote printing plates during World War II, first to Sweden and then to the Norwegian government-in-exile in London. There, English experts copy the plates so that the resistance can print counterfeit notes back home. The aim is not subversion but liberation, funding underground operations to fight German occupation.
Dhurandhar turns this narrative inside out. Here, the act of patriotic defiance becomes one of treachery and infiltration. Foreign agents, aided by domestic corruption, weaponise the same idea to wage economic war against India. It’s a classic thriller inversion, noble heroism recast as high-stakes sabotage. Yet this reinterpretation serves more than narrative tension. Critics have noted how the film’s storyline conveniently echoes the rhetoric surrounding India’s 2016 demonetisation reimagining it as a bold countermeasure against Pakistani counterfeiting networks rather than a disruptive economic gamble.
As a film, Dhurandhar is slick, tense, and packed with adrenaline. As an idea, it’s more complicated. By borrowing from Number 24’s story of resistance and rebranding it as a nationalist parable, it blurs the boundary between cinematic invention and political messaging. One tale celebrates defiance against occupation; the other reframes anxiety about internal betrayal. Both grip the audience but for very different reasons.
