In a bizarre and risky incident, a North Western #Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (#NWKRTC) bus driver navigated a pitch-dark rural stretch in #Dharwad district using passengers' mobile phone flashlights after the vehicle’s headlights suffered a complete electrical failure.
The bus had departed #Hubballi around 8:00 PM, heading toward Attigere. Trouble struck near the Saunshi bus stop in Kundgol taluk when a suspected short circuit severed the front wiring, completely cutting off the vehicle's headlights.
Left stranded in the dark along a state route, the crew opted not to wait for a replacement vehicle. Instead, passengers stepped in, aiming their mobile phone torches through the windshield to illuminate the asphalt ahead.
The driver navigated the vehicle through Gudgeri before finally reaching Attigere, covering approximately 11 to 12 kilometers in the dark. Because of the compromised visibility, the journey took nearly 45 minutes to an hour at a crawl.
A video recorded by a commuter at the Gudgeri stop quickly circulated on social media, capturing the aftermath and drawing sharp scrutiny over passenger safety. In the footage, a passenger confirms the ordeal: "There’s no power, nothing. All the front headlights stopped working. The bus was driven all the way holding a torch from Saunshi up to this Gudageri stop... It took about an hour to cover 12 kilometers."
When questioned on camera, the bus driver admitted to the makeshift setup. "The wiring got completely cut. Everything shorted and went completely dead," the driver explained, confirming the bus was operated using mobile phone lights while pleading with the person filming not to escalate the footage to senior transport officials.
Although many people are questioning the incident and the maintenance of government buses, many are praising the driver for making sure passengers reached home safely and on time.
