In the backdrop of escalating diplomatic tensions, a group of Indian hackers have claimed to have initiated a campaign dubbed #OpCanada, with their crosshairs set on Canadian cyber assets, including the country's military website.
The Canadian Armed Forces' website was temporarily taken offline for 2 hours on Wednesday (September 27) as part of the cyberattack orchestrated by the 'Indian Cyber Force', with the group claiming that the next target would be the Canadian IOT devices.
The cyberattack, according to experts, is believed to be a โdistributed denial of serviceโ (DDoS) assault aimed at sending a message to the Canadian government.
Notably, DDoS attacks are typically short-lived, lasting hours or days at most. Most hacking groups, masquerading as internet activists, use DDoS attacks as a method to draw attention to themselves rather than a serious effort to cause damage.
It came amid the diplomatic standoff between India and Canada after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, last week, levelled allegations against India over Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar's death.
India rejected the allegations with a strong statement, calling them "absurd". It also asked Canada to come down hard on terrorists and anti-India elements operating from its soil and suspended visa services for Canadians.
