Good luck to all those writing the #OSSLT. For those of you not too comfortable writing the OSSLT; there is always the literacy course #OSSLC, keep in mind you must attempt the OSSLT at least once!

#OSSLC is developing advanced questioning skills using the prompt “What would you want to ask?” as diff famous people were shown. Then they co-constructed what makes an interview question “good.” They’ll conduct their own interviews next week of adults they admire. #JASSlearns

#OSSLC Ss spent time reflecting on what we have been learning (they were surprised by how much!), how we know how we are doing (@SesameHQ ) and our next steps. These 3 questions are what all @JeanAugustineSS Ss will answer at tonight’s student-led conferences #JASSlearns

#OSSLC is working with print and digital news media to identify text form, to differentiate between news articles and editorials/opinion columns & to detect bias. #JASSlearns

#OSSLC Ss are making connections (text to text, text to self, text to world) using images & spoken word poetry by @LifeAsWali #JASSlearns

#OSSLC students worked in teams today using inferencing skills to sort the images from the incredible book #Unspoken & then reflected on the strategies they used. #JASSlearns

#OSSLC used children’s books today to put our reading skills of previewing, predicting, visualizing and asking questions to work. #JASSlearns

#OSSLC sorted texts using text features as clues for groupings. We also created and wrote our first blog entries sharing what we learned about text types. S said “Oh, now I know I like informational texts best!” #JASSlearns

#OSSLC spent time in the CSI mapping where everything is. They practiced graphical text skills while also getting more familiar with what the library can offer. Everyone learned what the book labels mean (PB F=paperback fiction) & took out a book to read for fun. #JASSlearns

Kicking off #OSSLC by using a dot inventory of reading preferences & experiences and then crowdsourcing narratives. Each student now has to “finish a story”- they can choose which one inspires them most!

Deep into planning for my #OSSLC course this semester. Hoping to develop confident, literate learners who can navigate reading and writing skills in a variety of contexts. Does anyone know of a teacher doing innovative things with this course? Would love to collaborate.
