That is a great assessment. They are #AntiChristian. They are #ProAbortion. They will not stand up to the #Islamic #Invasion. That’s the uncomfortable bit. When the answer was NO to #Orangemen, they were expected to respect the independent process. Now the answer is an extraordinarily restricted YES to 35 of them and accepting that independent process suddenly seems considerably more difficult.
You cannot demand that one community respect the #referee for decades and then want the referee dragged off the pitch the first time you don’t like the score. Think the determination is unlawful? Challenge it in court. That’s exactly what the #OrangeOrder did. But #independent decision-making cannot mean independent only when it produces the answer you wanted.
Then there’s Eastwood’s other phrase: “They’re not wanted.” HE IS ONE BITTER REPUBLICAN.
That should bother everybody. Since when did “you’re not wanted here” become a test for somebody else’s civil liberties?
Reverse it. Imagine a unionist #MP standing in a predominantly Protestant area talking about a small nationalist procession: Why do they even want to come down here? They’re not wanted. I think we all know the answer.
Then imagine him reaching back to #PIRA violence from 30 years ago to insinuate what today’s peaceful participants really intended. Would that language be acceptable? Of course it wouldn’t.
So apply exactly the same standard here.
A public road doesn’t become the cultural property of whichever community forms the local majority. Tolerance isn’t tolerating only people you like. Equality isn’t #equality only for your community.
#GarvaghyRoad residents have rights. They have every right to object, peacefully protest and challenge the determination in court. Orangemen have rights too. That should not be a controversial sentence.
And the #SDLP has a question to answer here as well. #ColumEastwood M.P. isn’t some anonymous Facebook account. He’s an elected SDLP MP and its former leader.
These are his words: “Domination.” “Triumphalism.” “Remind us who’s in charge.” “Forced and penned into their houses.” “They’re not wanted.” “I think we all know the answer.”
All while discussing 35 people, five of them stewards, one banner, no bands, no accompanying supporters, leaving by 8am, with the proposed procession silent.
Does the SDLP stand over that language?
Because reverse the communities again. If a unionist MP spoke about a small nationalist procession in equivalent terms, reaching into the violent past to cast suspicion over the people walking today, we would scrutinise every word.
The same standard has to apply here.
Eastwood says: “The days of domination and triumphalism are over and they’re not coming back.”
Good. For everyone.
No Protestant dominating a Catholic. No Catholic dominating a Protestant. No unionist dominating a nationalist. No nationalist dominating a unionist. No selective history. No hereditary guilt. No deciding another community’s civil liberties disappear because somebody says “you’re not wanted here”.
And no insinuating that 35 men walking silently with one banner, no bands and no supporters at eight in the morning are there to dominate Catholics unless you have evidence to prove it.
So after all the outrage, all the rhetoric and all the demands, I keep coming back to one very simple thing.
For 28 years Orangemen were told: respect the process. They did.
Now the process has produced one decision others cannot accept.
So perhaps the question everyone watching this from outside Northern Ireland should ask is:
Was the principle really “respect the process”? Or was it “respect the process for as long as the answer is NO”?
