Worth noting that top endurance athletes (e.g. Ironman competitors) training ~20 hours per week in their 70's will have the same VO2max as a typical 20-29 yo in their "peak performance" years.

Here's what I see...
A lot of ultra-competitive guys (~70ml/kg/min) in their 30's disappear from the sport when no longer 'fast'
A lot of less competitive guys (50's ml/kg/min) stick with the sport through their life.
Take that for what you will, but my advice..

Of course it’s not. But the point is these guys have done zero training for 22 years, gained 35 pounds, and are still above normal by a significant amount.
A high Vo2max when young is good. It buys you a lot of wiggle room. What you do with that is your choice.
The point is be like the other guys in the study and keep training a bit.
@stevemagness @brady_h A VO2max of 46 ml/kg/min in your 40's is hardly protective, Steve.
Things aren't looking good by the time they hit 70 (despite their impressive 5K times at 30)

I don't mean to sound like the wise old owl 🦉of the forest or anything, but...
As you get older, you're going to realize that a VO2max of 50 in your 70's is *way* more important than a VO2max of 70 in your 30's
And, no, they don't just go together.
