il 21 settembre del 1987 ci lasciava tragicamente John Francis Anthony Pastorius III, semplicemente Jaco Pastorius.
E’ stato il bassista più influente della storia della musica, ha letteralmente rivoluzionato il modo di suonare il basso.
In realtà aveva iniziato a suonare la batteria ma a seguito di un infortunio calcistico al polso è costretto a smettere e a quindici anni inizia a suonare il basso, e lo fa in maniera ossessiva, senza posa. Acquista un Fender Jazz Bass del 1962 e lo trasformain fretless togliendo i tasti dal manico dello strumento e riempiendo le scalanature con mastice da navi.
Dopo svariate esperienze in gruppi locali o meno (passa anche un periodo suonandodulle navi) nel 1974 viene assoldato per suonare in un jazz club di New York dove suona con Pat Metheny con cui pubblica il disco Jaco. Pastorius suona invece in Bright Size Life di Metheny. Pubblica il suo disco d’esordio arricchito da musicisti di grande classe e assiste ad un concerto a Miami dei Weather Report, dopo il quale avvicina Joe Zawinul presentandosi così: “Sono John Francis Pastorius III. Sono il più grande bassista del mondo” chiedendo di entrare nel gruppo. All’epoca la band ha Alphonso Johnson al basso ma Zawinul resta impressionato da Pastorius e dalla sua sfacciataggine, chiede un demo al bassista e non appena Johnson lascia la band lo arruola immediatamente nel corso della registrazione del grandissimo Black Market del 1976 in cui Pastorius divide il basso con Johnson. Nel 1977 registra Haevy Weather ma è nel periodo co i Weather che iniziano i primi problemi di alcol e droghe.
Lascia il gruppo nel 1982 sia perché non soddisfatto della linea musicale data al gruppo da Zawinul sia perché interessato ad una propria carriera da solista (aveva firmato per la Warner e nel 1981 aveva pubblicato Word of Mouth.
All’esito del tour promozionale del disco, durante il quale i comportamenti di Pastorius diventano quanto meno bizzarri ed eccentrici, gli viene diagnosticato un disturbo bipolare della personalità. Le scarse vendite del disco e l’acuirsi della dipendenza da alcolici e droghe ne minano le risorse economiche, rimane sostanzialmente quasi privo di lavoro e a tratti anche privo di casa iniziando un lento ma inesorabile declino. La fine arriva nel settembre del 1987 quando viene brutalmente picchiato da un dipendente del Midnight Bottle Club a Wilton Manors. Ha rivoluzionato l’idea stessa di basso. Un po’ come Hendrix ha rivoluzionato la tecnica chitarristica.

Hartmut Holmbrecher erschließt in »Transatlantischer Kulturtransfer« erstmalig die Schriften von Franz Daniel Pastorius. Dieser gründete 1683 die erste deutsche Siedlung in den USA. Der heutige »German-American Day« erinnert an #Pastorius und ist in den #USA offizieller Feiertag.
