@khunsuayxx I tried kissing my coworker’s forehead too… she froze, smacked my arm, Laug so hard and yelled, “GURL?! WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!” 🙂↕️Meanwhile, LenaMiu kiss each other’s foreheads like it’s the most natural thing EVER. 😭Life is really unfair to me, I guess. 😂 #PlsloveEP2
My Thoughts on PLS Love Episode 2 - Focusing on Peem and Parn, Not Lena and Miu.
First of all, there’s one very important detail that I noticed has been changed from the novel to the series: Parn can actually talk back.
When I was reading the novel, I kept thinking, “How the hell did a sharp-tongued girl and someone who barely talks end up falling in love?” But the series has changed this aspect of Parn quite a lot. Parn knows how to argue, how to fight back, how to get annoyed, how to defend herself, and she even told her friends about it. These are things that were barely present in the novel. In the novel, Parn never really explained herself to Peem about “I’m not selling myself.” She simply let Peem think whatever she wanted to think. But in the series, Parn brings this up again and again.
Honestly, I think this adaptation choice is incredibly valuable. It gives the character so much more personality. Parn has more sides to her, more individuality, more depth, and she becomes much more interesting. It’s also easier for the audience to empathize with her and understand where she is coming from. I like this version of Parn so much more because she feels like a character who actually has substance rather than someone who could easily become boring.
Another thing I want to talk about is Peem.
Peem in the novel already has a very sharp mouth, sometimes she’s even more brutal than she is in the series, so I never expected the adaptation to tone that down too much, because if they did, she simply wouldn’t be Peem anymore. But the series has added a lot of moments where Peem regrets the things she says. She says something in the heat of the moment and then realizes afterward that she shouldn’t have said it.
And honestly, there are so many people like that in real life. They say whatever they want in the moment, get it off their chest, and then later sit there thinking, “Why the hell did I say that?” People like this are often people who have been hurt a lot themselves. They’re afraid of being hurt, so they protect themselves first by hurting someone else.
I’m going to wait and see how Peem’s character develops once the two of them actually acknowledge their feelings for each other, because I think that will be the most important part of her character development.
The series has also deliberately built Peem as a character who makes the audience have very mixed feelings about her. If they had kept everything exactly as it was in the novel, I think she would have been absolutely destroyed by the audience. 🤣 But the series gives her moments in the same episode where you hate her one second and then find her adorable the next, giving the audience a reason to forgive her.
If episode one was all about the sweetness between them at the beach, episode two shows Peem being completely chaotic while drunk, worrying about Parn, saying one thing while clearly feeling something completely different inside. The way Peem helps Parn and her friend is actually very straightforward and sincere. There’s no ulterior motive. She doesn’t even hesitate to ask, “Don’t you need me to take you home?” It’s not a situation where Peem helps someone just because she wants them to come with her, and then simply leaves them to deal with everything themselves.
The clothes-buying scene is the same. She sees how sparse Parn’s wardrobe is and simply wants to buy her some nice clothes, but then she has to cover it up with excuses and pretend that there’s some other reason behind it.
Even when she helps Parn at the restaurant, it’s because she doesn’t want Parn to be embarrassed. And when she pulls Parn into the private room after hearing her say, “That’s too expensive,” it’s also because she doesn’t want Parn to feel inferior. And most importantly, Peem never humiliates Parn in front of other people. If she wants to say something harsh, she takes Parn somewhere private.
Everyone has their pride, and knowing how to protect someone else’s dignity in front of strangers is a huge plus for Peem.
And I absolutely cannot leave out the moment when Peem wakes up and Parn is gone. I could see a thousand different kinds of hurt in Peem within those few seconds. That feeling of being abandoned again. That emptiness. She used every possible way to keep someone by her side, and yet when she wakes up, that person has still left.
I chose this picture because I simply want to say:
PEEM AND PARN ARE IN LOVE ALREADYYYYYYY.
Basically, they’ve been in love since the beach. So all those irrational actions, all those things they probably shouldn’t be doing, let’s just summarize it as: they’re doing it because they’re in love.
Parn becoming soft toward Peem is incredibly obvious. The fact that there are things she supposedly has “rules” about not doing, yet she does them for Peem anyway, is proof enough. She takes Peem home. She takes care of Peem. When she sees Peem holding the medicine box, she immediately panics and thinks Peem is injured. She calls Peem cute. All of it. And when that person’s mouth gets too damn annoying, Parn gets genuinely frustrated because deep down, she can tell that Peem isn’t actually a bad person. So why does she have to act like this?
Once again: Parn does not sell herself. Even when she names the price as three million, even when she agrees to give herself to Peem, there is only one reason: BECAUSE IT’S PEEM.
Even in the final scene, she does resist, but not enough to truly push Peem away, because deep down, she already has feelings for her.
From this episode onward, I think we’re going to see much more of Parn’s inner world. After Parn learns about Peem’s family background, that feeling of being unworthy is going to start appearing more and more often.
The way Parn enters Peem’s house and doesn’t dare sit down. The way she worries about making Peem’s furniture dirty if she does sit down. The way she doesn’t dare buy anything because she’s afraid it will be too expensive. The way she doesn’t want Peem to come to her house. All of these things come from the same emotion: “I’m not worthy of her.”
Parn already didn’t want Peem to know what she did for a living. Now Peem also knows where she comes from and what her financial situation is like. That shame, that feeling of being unworthy of Peem, is only going to become stronger.
And finally, there’s one line that has really stayed with me: “Why does it have to be you?”
This is one of those lines where people can interpret it however they want, because depending on whose perspective you look at it from, it can carry a completely different meaning.
From Peem’s perspective, it could mean: “Why does it have to be you that I use to negotiate this contract?” It could be Peem feeling reluctant, not wanting to use Parn as part of her business dealings.
But from Parn’s perspective, Parn doesn’t know any of that. She could interpret it as: “Why did I have to end up meeting someone like you, a hostess like you?”
And regardless of whose perspective you take, that line still hits me emotionally. It leaves this uncomfortable, lingering feeling that I can’t quite shake.
The one thing I wish had been different in this episode probably comes back to the fact that the series only has eight episodes. The pacing is a little fast, but honestly, I can’t blame the writers or the director because everyone is doing a really good job with what they have.
I just wish the reason why Parn needed three million had been kept in the adaptation, because that part feels a little abrupt without it. You suddenly see Parn name the three-million price and then go along with Peem’s proposal, and there’s this slight feeling of, “Wait, why three million?” Something feels like it’s missing. That plot point being cut makes the scene feel a little incomplete when watching the series.
And there’s one more thing: the final scene. Personally, I would have liked it to slow down just a little.
After Peem establishes her claim over Parn, I would have loved to see her soften a little afterward. I think that would have made Parn eventually giving in feel more natural and emotionally convincing.
There are a few moments where I wish the scene had lasted just a little longer, so we could really see the characters’ emotions settle and develop on their faces. I think that would have made the scene hit the audience even harder.
