"Yes. You’re now watching footage of Hak Ja Han, leader of the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification (Unification Church), being temporarily released.
She appears in a wheelchair, wearing a mask, and holding a bag close to her chest.
This release is in effect until 4 p.m. on November 7, for a total of three days.
According to the Unification Church, she will receive medical treatment at a hospital during this period.
Hak Ja Han had been detained and indicted on charges of providing money and valuables to Kim Keon-hee, as well as offering 100 million won in illegal political funds to lawmaker Kwon Seong-dong.
The court has now granted suspension of her detention until 4 p.m. Friday, November 7.
This kind of suspension of detention is a legal measure that allows temporary release when the defendant is recognized as having a serious illness or other urgent humanitarian reason.
The suspension takes effect immediately, and unlike bail, no deposit is required.
On November 1, her legal team filed for suspension of detention on medical grounds.
Earlier, due to her advanced age and heart condition, she was unable to attend several summonses from the special prosecutor, and after being detained, she also applied for a detention review.
We are now seeing live footage of Hak Ja Han’s temporary release—she is being assisted into a vehicle while in a wheelchair.
Prosecutors allege that, together with Yoon Young-ho, Director-General of the Unification Church’s World Headquarters, she offered 100 million won in political funds to Rep. Kwon Seong-dong in January 2022, requesting the Yoon Suk-yeol administration’s support for the Unification Church.
She was indicted on October 10.
Between April and July 2022, she allegedly diverted 144 million won of church funds for split political donations to members of the ruling party.
She is also accused of giving luxury jewelry and a handbag to First Lady Kim Keon-hee through “Geonjin Beopsa” (Jeon Sung-bae) to influence government affairs related to the church.
Again, citing health reasons, Hak Ja Han applied for suspension of detention on November 1, which the court approved.
She will therefore remain released until 4 p.m. Friday, November 7.
