particularly on Ellesmere Island, stone tree trunks represent petrified wood from ancient swamp forests that thrived about 50 million years ago during the Eocene epoch.

▶️ When the region supported a warm, humid climate with towering metasequoia (dawn redwood) conifers and other trees amid ferns and lotus plants.
These trunks turned to stone through permineralization:
▪️ Trees fell in swampy environments, became rapidly buried in oxygen-poor sediment (often linked to volcanic activity or floods).
▪️ Groundwater rich in dissolved silica infiltrated the wood, gradually replacing organic material cell by cell with minerals.
▪️ While preserving details like bark, growth rings, and surrounding coal layers from decayed plant matter.
↘️ This process transformed the wood into durable quartz-like stone, now exposed by erosion in today's tundra.

Located in northeastern Arizona, it is renowned for its Late Triassic Chinle Formation, a sequence of colorful sedimentary rocks deposited over 200 million years ago in a fluvial (river-dominated) environment.

▶️ This formation creates the park's iconic badlands, mesas, and buttes, particularly in the Painted Desert region.
It is subdivided into several members, with the Petrified Forest Member being the most notable for containing vast quantities of petrified wood.
This member consists of thick reddish mudstones interspersed with brown sandstone layers, often reworked volcaniclastic (volcanic ash-derived) materials that appear as white and pink units.
The overall Chinle Formation's vibrant hues, range from red and purple to green and blue.
Stem from mineral variations in ancient soil horizons.
Iron and manganese are present throughout, but colors depend on environmental conditions during deposition.
Oxidized iron produces rusty reds and oranges, while reduced (low-oxygen) conditions yield greens and blues from iron minerals like chlorite or celadonite.
Mineralogically, the petrified wood itself is a stunning example of permineralization, where the original organic structure of ancient conifer and seed fern trees is preserved through replacement by microcrystalline quartz (chalcedony and agate varieties).
The silica-rich minerals infiltrate the wood's cellular structure, often retaining intricate details like tree rings and bark textures.
Coloration in the petrified logs arises from trace impurities.
Iron oxides (hematite and goethite) impart reds, oranges, and yellows.
Manganese oxides contribute purples and blacks; and carbon or other organics add browns.
Associated minerals in the surrounding sediments include gypsum (selenite) in evaporative lenses and volcanic-derived clays, enhancing the formation's diversity.
The petrified wood formed during the Late Triassic Epoch (approximately 225–201 million years ago), when a lush floodplain ecosystem supported towering trees up to 200 feet tall.
Fallen logs were rapidly buried by river sediments and volcanic ash from distant eruptions, preventing decay in an oxygen-poor environment.
Over millions of years, silica-saturated groundwater, derived from percolating volcanic ash and dissolved minerals, slowly infiltrated the buried wood.
Through permineralization, the silica precipitated and replaced the organic cellulose and lignin molecule by molecule, while the wood's structure was preserved.
Tectonic uplift around 60 million years ago elevated the region, and ongoing erosion has since exposed these fossilized logs, fracturing them naturally along growth rings due to geological stress.
This process, spanning diagenetic alteration and evaporation in ancient lakes, transformed the organic remains into durable, gem-like quartz replicas.
