Can an LLM learn to make good sequential decisions?
That's the question behind my latest #PIAS #blog post, "𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐀𝐈 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐒𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐃𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧-𝐌𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 — 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐈𝐭 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬."
Most of the excitement around LLMs has focused on one-shot tasks: classification, translation, a clever answer to a single prompt. But the decisions that matter most in the real world don't work that way.
In our recent work, we asked a simple question: can we equip a pretrained LLM to make good sequential decisions from offline data — and can we understand why it works?
A few takeaways:
🔹 Instead of building a specialized model from scratch, we fine-tune an open-source pretrained LLM so it can read a handful of demonstrations and act in a new, unseen task — no further updates needed at test time.
🔹 We don't stop at intuition. For linear MDPs, we look inside the attention layer and show it behaves like an implicit estimator of the optimal value function, with a clean theoretical bound on how far the learned policy can fall short of optimal.
🔹 We tackle the hard, realistic cases — not just fully observable settings, but partial observability and genuine model ambiguity, which are the norm in medicine, not edge cases.
🔹 The gains are largest exactly where they're hardest to get. On a sparse-reward task with hidden goals, the approach reaches ~95% of oracle performance on held-out goals.

Los Pueblos Indígenas en Aislamiento Voluntario siguen ocultados por el gobierno del Ecuador
El 13 de marzo del 2025, el Estado ecuatoriano fue notificado de una sentencia histórica de la Corte Interamericana de Derechos Humanos @CIDH sobre los pueblos en aislamiento Tagaeri y Taromenane.
La CIDH fue clara: Ecuador violó derechos fundamentales al no proteger efectivamente su territorio, permitir incursiones de terceros y no aplicar el principio de precaución frente a actividades extractivas cercanas a la Zona Intangible Tagaeri Taromenane.
La sentencia ordenó medidas concretas: fortalecer la protección territorial, crear una comisión técnica para evaluar la Zona Intangible (ZITT), mejorar el monitoreo, controlar las incursiones y garantizar salvaguardas frente a actividades petroleras. Ha pasado un año.
Pero desde el "territorio" la realidad es otra. Comunidades, guardaparques y organizaciones que trabajan en la zona no reportan cambios visibles en el control territorial, ni nuevas medidas efectivas para impedir el ingreso de madereros, cazadores, colonos o aventureros que buscan recursos genéticos.
Tampoco hay señales claras de que se hayan implementado mecanismos para adaptar la protección territorial a la movilidad de los pueblos en aislamiento, uno de los puntos centrales de la sentencia.
Al ignorar una sentencia internacional, se incumple una obligación jurídica y se pone aún en más riesgo la supervivencia de pueblos enteros que han decidido vivir sin contacto o que son obligados a ello por la ausencia del Estado. Con estas omisiones se debilita la credibilidad del propio Estado que Ud Sr Presidente @DanielNoboaOk dirige (si no tiene claro quienes son los PIAs, pregunte a @inesmanzano que en el pasado contribuyó a su protección y se vinculó a la Zona Intangible Tagaeri Taromenane).
Un año después, se incumple la sentencia de la Corte Interamericana.
