For the first three days of school, my 7th grade World Studies students won’t learn about maps, oceans, or continents. They’ll learn how learning happens. Using the Willingham Simple Memory Model, and a single photograph of a busy Italian piazza, we’ll dissect environment, attention, working memory, long-term memory, retrieval, and forgetting. As we do, every instructional procedure and routine is practiced and connected back to the cognitive science behind it so students understand not just what we do, but why.
