2014–15: P-TECH launched out of the gate with a massive 65% college-readiness rate. To put that in perspective, the overall NYC average was just 35%, and the local Borough average was 34%. P-TECH was outperforming the city by a staggering 30 percentage points.
2015–16 to 2017–18: P-TECH maintained remarkably stable excellence, hovering consistently between 58% and 67% readiness.
The Rising Tide: Fascinatingly, P-TECH’s model was so disruptive that it raised the baseline around it.
By 2018–19, while city-wide averages climbed to 57% and its designated Comparison Group rose to 61%, P-TECH still led the pack at 65%.
Fast forward to the 2025–2026 school year, and the numbers speak for themselves. According to the latest data from Public School Review, P-TECH has officially secured three historic, crown-jewel accolades based on combined math and reading proficiency test scores:

Overall testing rank is based on a school's combined math and reading proficiency test score ranking. Our minority enrollment is 99% of the student body (majority Black), which is higher than the New York state average of 60% (majority Hispanic and Black).

As a proud graduate of Morehouse College—Class of 1992—and a co-designer of the P-TECH model, I have spent the last 20 years as a principal bridging the gap between historical promises and modern opportunities. When our ancestors achieved emancipation, education became their highest priority. It was their engine for upward mobility. They didn’t just seek basic literacy and mathematics; they demanded a comprehensive education that encompassed workforce readiness, civic responsibility, and pathways into advanced professions like law, medicine, pharmacy, and teaching.
This very philosophy is baked into the design of P-TECH. By fusing high school, college, and career readiness, we reimagined that ancestral blueprint through STEM education, and our model has now expanded to 16 states (8 have already produced P-TECH college graduates) and 28 countries.
It is incredibly poignant to look at Texas (161 years later), where 313 P-TECH programs welcomed students at the start of the 2025–2026 school year. Ultimately, Juneteenth delivered the sacred promise of freedom, but it has always been education that provides the power to realize it.

NYC Public Schools a high school principal with more than 20 years of experience and in the school year 2007-08, I Rashid Ferrod Davis was the principal at Bronx Engineering and Technology Academy (BETA) our school's overall score of 67.4 placed us in the 69th percentile of all New York City high schools. Thus, 69 percent of schools scored lower than us. New York State Education Department

IBM turned 115 on June 16, 2026. The company was originally incorporated on June 16, 1911, as the Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company (CTR) before changing its name to International Business Machines (IBM) in 1924.
IBM is P-TECH's founding industry partner which opened in 2011. P-TECH is replicated in 16 states (8 have produced P-TECH college graduates) and 28 countries.
The transition and rebranding from Open P-TECH to IBM SkillsBuild officially took place in 2021.
Quick Timeline
May 2020: IBM globally launched Open P-TECH as a free digital learning platform geared toward high school students and teachers.
Mid-2021: IBM integrated and rebranded the platform into IBM SkillsBuild (specifically under the "IBM SkillsBuild for Students and Educators" banner) to consolidate its free technology training and career readiness programs into a single, unified ecosystem.
