President Donald Trump said United States Representatives #Ilhan Omar and #Rashida Tlaib should be sent "back from where they came from" after the two Democratic lawmakers protested his State of the Union address.
In a late Wednesday post on his Truth Social platform, Trump attacked the lawmakers for their conduct during his Tuesday speech. He described them as "LUNATICS" and "mentally deranged," writing that the US "should send them back from where they came – as fast as possible".
Omar, a Somali American, and Tlaib, a Palestinian American, had shouted in protest as Trump touted his administration's immigration enforcement actions. As the president told legislators the US should end "sanctuary cities," the pair yelled, "You have killed Americans!".
Omar later stated on social media that she was reminding Trump that his administration was responsible for the deaths of two of her constituents.
In January, two US citizens were killed by federal officers in Minnesota—where Omar's district is located—during protests against raids by immigration and customs agents.
Tlaib, the first woman of Palestinian descent in the US Congress, responded to the attack by calling him "#PresidentMajnoon," using an Arabic word translating to mad, fanatical, or possessed.
She stated on social media that Trump was lashing out because he could not handle two Muslim women "talking back and correcting him".
Trump's post singled out Omar and Tlaib but omitted other protesting Democrats.
He did not mention Representative Sarah McBride, who reportedly also shouted during the speech, or Representative Al Green, who was removed from the floor for holding a sign protesting a racist video of former President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama that Trump recently shared online.
