When southern states refused to follow Supreme Court rulings banning segregation in interstate travel, 13 activists from the Congress of Racial Equality boarded buses and changed America forever. The first Freedom Ride left Washington, DC 65 years ago today. My late, great colleague and friend, John Lewis, was on that bus. He was 21 years old, and he refused to be denied the equality this country had promised him. They were beaten. Their bus was firebombed. They were arrested by the hundreds. And they kept going. Their courage forced the federal government to enforce desegregation in interstate travel and helped build the movement that won the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Just last week, the Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act in Louisiana v. Callais. The fight John Lewis bled for is being unraveled in real time. If 13 young people could face down Jim Crow with nothing but their convictions, we can finish what they started. We can and we must pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and protect the right to vote once and for all.
