RIP Patrick O’Flynn I met Paddy in 1996 - he was Political Editor at The Daily Express and I was based at Westminster for the Financial Times. His talent and sharp intellect were immediately apparent - a formidable combination of economic expertise, political nous and instinctive feel (depressingly rare among journalists these days) for public sentiment and the national mood. Paddy had strong opinions - but they were built on research and observation, rather than ideology or dogma. His views were heartfelt and firmly held - but never prevented him from giving others a fair hearing or thinking he had nothing to learn. Just as he embraced his political comrades, Paddy sought out and respected those with whom he disagreed - which is why his basic decency is being so widely acknowledged, his many friendships across the political spectrum. Paddy was 59, just a few years older than me. Amidst a busy professional and family Iife, he took care to keep in touch over the years - offering ideas, encouragement and wise counsel. He has been taken from us far, far too young. I will miss him enormously. I am shattered by news that Patrick has died - and send my deepest condolences to Carole Ann and his family Patrick O’Flynn 29.08.65 - 20.05.25
