During the 1980s and 1990s, Pune was known for its vibrant cycling culture, earning it the nickname โCycle City.โ Back then, I could effortlessly pedal from one end of Pune to another within 15 to 20 minutes.
For instance, the journey from Pune Camp to Khadki took only 15 minutes, while Deccan to Yerwada or Shivajinagar to Pimpri 20 minutes. Even longer distances, such as Deccan to Pashan, would require 15 minutes only, and an additional 5 to 10 minutes to reach Baner from Pashan. Similarly, it took a mere 10 minutes to travel from Karve Road to Swargate.
However, today, these same routes take an average of 18 to 34 minutes by motorized vehicles. On congested days, we find ourselves spending 15 minutes just to cover a single kilometer. This dire situation begs the question: How did we end up here? The answer is simple: A lack of comprehensive planning.
Regrettably, like many Punekars, I eventually abandoned cycling in favor of motorcycles, covering the same distances in half the time. It seemed like an efficient choice at that point. Pune continued to grow, and so did our personal achievements. Then, my first car entered the picture. In 1990, Pune had 400 km of roads, resulting in an absence of traffic jams, pollution, and parking hassles. Now, the city boasts over 4,000 km of roads
