"A leading facility in the study of hadronic matter and the strong force since 2000, RHIC now hands its tunnel and many of its components to its successor, the Electron–Ion Collider." - @CERNCourier

This is how we moved an 11,000-pound "thermos" for superconducting magnets out of a particle collider.
Relocating this cryostat was an early milestone in transforming #RHIC into the #ElectronIonCollider. One down, many more to go!
Following the final collisions at #RHIC, the 2026 Users' Meeting covered the collider's last run, honored the history of RHIC, and explored the next phase of nuclear physics with the #ElectronIonCollider.

Data from near-miss collisions at #RHIC will help physicists map the "glue" that holds visible matter together. https://t.co/9Q6vGpyhsw
Like using X-rays to see broken bones, researchers at #RHIC can use particles of light to "see" inside the nucleus — even when the nuclei don't smash together at this particle collider. https://t.co/9Q6vGpyhsw
"All good things must come to an end" was a sentiment felt throughout the 2026 RHIC and AGS Users' Meeting.
Researchers around the world celebrated a monumental era of physics, as #RHIC completed its final run and #ElectronIonCollider preparations begin. https://t.co/ap0WUZqPhh
Scientists studying particle collisions at #RHIC usually capture what happens when atomic nuclei smash into one another at nearly the speed of light.
But even when the nuclei don’t collide, researchers can still uncover details about subatomic particles.

Thousands of scientists from around the world have used #RHIC data to:
⚛️ explore quarks and gluons, visible matter’s most fundamental building blocks
⚛️ map out the phases of nuclear matter
⚛️ investigate the origins of proton spin https://t.co/d2GvrZSQaf
We reached a milestone in transforming #RHIC into the #ElectronIonCollider: moving the first cryostat. This giant instrument is like an ultra-cold thermos for superconducting magnets. We relocated it to a new position in the tunnel, where it will be part of a “bypass” in the EIC.

The removal process is expected to take place over six years, with a work plan designed to enable simultaneous progress on #ElectronIonCollider construction.
It will encompass the removal and/or repurposing of approximately 6,500 major #RHIC components. https://t.co/Sm5rAh2DEj

The #ElectronIonCollider will be reuse major components of #RHIC, including its entire 2.4-mile-circumference tunnel, one of its superconducting-magnet ion storage rings, and other major accelerator and detector equipment. https://t.co/Sm5rAh2DEj
"A pair of rare particles produced in high-energy proton collisions may be the clearest evidence yet that mass can emerge from empty space," @newscientist reports on #RHIC research. https://t.co/9OYV8ljI80
We've started removing and repurposing accelerator and detector equipment from #RHIC to begin its transformation into the #ElectronIonCollider.

A six-ton, $10-million piece of scientific equipment arrived at Brookhaven today, ready to take its place in the atom smasher now under construction. Called a time projection chamber, the device will be installed at the STAR experiment.
