EDINBURGH STUDENT CAUGHT WITH 'DEPRAVED' CHILD ABUSE FILMS INCLUDING MURDER-THEMED VIDEOS WALKS FREE A 54-year-old university student who amassed a sickening collection of child sexual abuse images and videos, including material bearing titles referring to rape and murder, has avoided prison. Neil Hansen, a self-described animal rights activist from Edinburgh, was caught after police received intelligence about extreme material being accessed and copied at his home in Moredun. Officers raided his property and seized three laptops, seven mobile phones and three USB devices. Investigators uncovered 242 indecent images and videos involving children, including 75 Category A files, representing the most serious classification, alongside 40 Category B and 127 Category C files. Some videos carried disturbing titles referring to children being raped, abducted and murdered. Edinburgh Sheriff Court heard Hansen had accessed online chat rooms and searched for sexual abuse material involving underage girls. Hansen pleaded guilty to taking, permitting to be taken or making indecent photographs of children. Sentencing him, Sheriff Kenneth Campbell QC described his interests as "depraved" and said Hansen had become desensitised to the material. However, the sheriff decided intensive rehabilitation in the community would better protect the public than imprisonment. Hansen was handed a three-year supervision order, required to undergo assessment for a specialist sex offender programme and placed on the Sex Offenders Register for three years. Despite the disturbing nature of the collection, Hansen walked out of court without an immediate prison sentence.
