Someone asked how I think about #slock.
I was one of the earliest heavy users, and a while back they gave me Founder Plan access (lifetime free). After a few months of using it deeply, plus a lot of experimentation around org design and collaboration, my current take is:
there is real surprise there, but it’s still very far from enough.
At first, the surprise came from one thing: it was clearly a step beyond the “just put a few agents into Slack” idea. The taste is good.
A lot of products in this category are basically just Slack + Agent. Same collaboration surface, same message flow, same assumptions, with AI workers dropped into the middle of it.
Slock at least seems to understand that the interface for humans and agents to work together can’t just be a reskinned IM.
Because once you actually let multiple agents live in the same channel for a while, the first few days feel magical, almost sci-fi. Then you start sweating.
Messages get longer. Broadcasts multiply. It gets less and less clear who is picking something up, who should review it, and when a human is actually supposed to step in.
That’s the part I’ve been thinking about a lot lately.
The hard part of AI-era collaboration may not be making agents more capable. It may be preserving human control.
Output goes up, but so does anxiety. And that makes sense. Most orgs do not need “even more agents that can execute.” What they’re missing is air cover, hierarchy, ownership, boundaries, and noise reduction.
To Slock’s credit, they do seem to feel this early.
Over the last few months, you can see them moving in that direction: thread inbox, task board, attachments, more runtime support, and then ideas like sandbox, cron, knowledge base.
That usually means the team has already realized the first version of the problem statement was too small.
Still, my current feeling is that it’s far from what I would call a truly native collaboration tool.
Today it feels more like an agent-native chat workspace, which is a useful transition product.
What I want is closer to an operating system for organizations in the AI era.
Those are very different things.
The first helps humans and agents chat, collaborate, and invoke capabilities in one place.
The second has to answer much harder questions:
How does work enter the system?
Who owns it?
Who is merely informed?
What should move automatically?
What must be reviewed?
Who needs raw noise, and who should only see summaries and decisions?
If you don’t solve that layer, more agents just means a higher chance the org falls into a new trap: everyone looks busy, but the system gets blurrier and harder to control.
Another thing I keep noticing: when people talk about AI collaboration tools, the default assumption is still “everyone is in one channel talking together.”
That is not how real organizations operate.
In good organizations, a huge amount of low-level information is supposed to be absorbed, compressed, and routed before it ever reaches the next layer.
People do not feel in control because they saw every message. Usually it’s the opposite.
Control comes back when someone, or some system, shields you from noise and only pulls you in at the right moments.
So my bar for these products has changed.
I’m no longer asking whether they can bring agents into the workflow, or how many agents can run in one channel.
I’m asking whether they can quietly handle the parts of organizational collaboration that nobody wants to manage manually but absolutely have to be managed anyway:
how context gets compressed,
how tasks move,
how ownership gets clarified,
what should surface,
and what should disappear.
A collaboration tool that doesn’t solve for responsibility, boundaries, tempo, and control is not really an AI-era workspace.
