Why is the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders apparently trying to persuade consumers to buy electric cars?
That is the question I'm asking after the SMMT published an extraordinary statement following the August 2026 new-car registration figures:
“For consumers considering the switch to electric, the market offerings are highly compelling.”
But then came the sentence that really caught my attention:
“The priority now is to turn interest into orders.”
Orders for electric cars.
This isn't Tesla, BYD or an EV dealership talking. This is the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders — the organisation whose monthly registration statistics are routinely quoted across the British media as an authoritative account of what's happening in the UK new-car market.
So where does reporting the market end and promoting one part of that market begin?
In this video, I examine the SMMT's own August figures and, crucially, its own words.
BEVs achieved an impressive 29.8% market share in August, with 28,063 registrations, up 27.7% year-on-year.
But SMMT itself acknowledges that August is an unusually low-volume month, typically accounting for only around 4% of annual registrations, and describes the high BEV percentage as part of a “recurring seasonal spike.”
Zoom out to January-August and BEV market share stands at 25.62%.
SMMT itself describes this as “significantly below the 33% headline mandate target.”
And then comes another fascinating admission:
“Manufacturers are investing heavily and discounting deeply to stimulate demand.”
So let's put those statements together.
EV offerings are supposedly “highly compelling.”
The priority is to “turn interest into orders.”
But manufacturers are simultaneously “discounting deeply to stimulate demand.”
Those statements raise some legitimate questions.
I'm not suggesting SMMT's registration figures are false, nor am I suggesting that nobody wants an EV. Hundreds of thousands of electric cars are being registered and there are plenty of people for whom an EV makes perfect sense.
The issue I'm examining is something different:
Should an organisation whose market statistics are treated as authoritative analysis also be actively encouraging consumers to buy one particular powertrain?
And when it subsequently tells us how strongly EV demand is performing, should its commentary be viewed purely as independent market analysis — or partly as industry advocacy
Should the SMMT be encouraging consumers to buy EVs — or should its public messaging concentrate on representing and reporting on the whole motor industry?
