Day 23 #ssac2016 “The Lunacy of Gumbo” by Padgett Powell
Appropriately funky (given the subject matter) little story. Agreed with the sentiment that a person will obsess over a few foods in their life (Spanish tortilla, roasted tomatoes here)

Even in the harsh and brutal reality of Russian life, apparently small graces can still persevere, against all odds, at Christmas.

Unique, but well written story, felt post modernism inspired / influenced with it’s mix of morphing magical realism and micro character traits and works. Not sure about the title either.

Great story about the unquiet experience of aging, holding on to the vitality of the music you love, and the appreciation for things that used to require little to no thought nor effort.

Had trouble connecting with this story..a few gorgeous passages and ideas, but had trouble finding the through line of the narrative.

To echo @barbaramcveigh, we all have an Elainey character in our family, but what I most enjoyed was the dichotomy between the narrator and Elainey, and a vague sense of potential overlap.

Loved the inevitable consequence of the parents’ ‘loving’ deceit in this story. Children are always smarter than adults realize.

Reincarnation, the question of consciousness, the ability to evolve and transform, and dirt . . . short, thought provoking, playful, and ultimately, hopeful.

Heartbreaking and insightful portrait of an LA Chicano gang member and the girl who loves, (but can’t save) him. Tragic study of those that can see a way out, and those that can not.

@barbaramcveigh In addition to your spot on reference to Killing Eve, I also thought of the O-Ren Ishii character from Kill Bill Vol. 1.

Greatly enjoyed this story that struck me as the spiritual offspring of Jorge Luis Borges’ ‘The Circular Ruins’ spliced with Day 1 #ssac2016’s story ‘Hunger Strike’ by Kevin Wilson.

Day 8 #ssac2016 “Treading” by Charles Demers
Perfect stream of consciousness dialogue, immediately reminded me of a Coen Brothers character. Loved the rambling, fumbling, treading nature of his monologue. Another great piece.

Excellent observational satire commentary on the modern media cycle in the U.S., so spot on regarding the machine that just needs the next lead or rumor to crank back up. Top notch story.

Loved this story, and the authentic voice of the recovering and struggling addict, her son, and all of the illusions being dismantled as the story goes on.

Seductive tale dripping with gothic tones, gorgeously weaving religion, magic, water, darkness, and questions large and small. Yet another winner from @hingstonolsen.

Day 4, #ssac2016, ‘Bestiary’ by Thomas Wharton.
Entertaining collection of ideas, sketches, and mini stories all involving animals. Really loved the mini story about the genesis of a man’s equinophobia. Lots of interesting ideas throughout.

Day 3, #ssac2016, ‘Just Like Us’ by Vanessa Hua.
Loved this beautiful and bittersweet story centered around lack of stability, unsupervised adolescence, coming of age for a young girl, and a yearning for secrets and a secured place in this world.
