The #SSAConf2020 was excellent. Thanks to all organisers, speakers etc. Educational, motivational and thought provoking couple of days.
Well done @Dr_Sarah_Fox Leading from the front for another year #ssaconf2020
Thought provoking/passionate talk by
@drcarlhart, excellent points about focusing on societal and policy issues with regards to the approach to addiction (not just biology), and the importance of education for safe substance use.. lots to think about! #SSAConf2020
has really appreciated the amazing forum for discussion facilitated by #SSAConf2020. So many important issues related to addiction and substance use have been addressed/debated - what a fantastic few days it's been!
WDP's Medical Director @arundhan11 chairing a discussion on #Alcohol Care Teams at #SSAConf2020 today!
Thank you @SSA_Addiction for organising a great conference! We really enjoyed attending and look forward to incorporating some of the findings into how we deliver WDP services.

What can we do to address the inequalities perpetuated by the field? @drcarlhart directs us to look away from the US. Some possible solutions are decriminalising personal use, treatment reserved for those who want it and civil disobedience against unjust drug laws. #SSAConf2020

Another problem in the field is the over pathologizing consequences of drug use (e.g. brain disease model of addiction). This allows authorities to avoid dealing with real problems faced by people.

"The behaviour of researchers & clinicians allows authorities to scapegoat drugs in an effort not to deal with the real problems that people on the margins face." A blinder of a talk @drcarlhart - I'm getting the book. SitUpAndListen at the @SSA_Addiction conference! #SSAConf2020
Really informative, highlights the reality that the war of drugs is war on people. Addiction is complex - holistic approaches needed to understand the risk and prevention factors. #SSAConf2020

Excellent session by Prof. Carl Hart. Widespread social inequality is a key factor in harmful substance use. The stigmas of poverty and all forms of oppression require greater attention.
Immediate solutions for the drug crisis by @drcarlhart Most compelling talk I've heard in a very long time and a great speaker. Will have to check out his new book "Drug Use for Grown-Ups: Chasing Liberty in the Land of Fear" #SSAConf2020

@drcarlhart’s plenary session was the perfect way to round out the #SSAConf2020 and the second most engaging thing to happen this week #Election2020 We need to stop believing what we are told and do better. We need to decriminalise drugs. *mic drop*
Amazing talk by @drcarlhart on the importance of addressing social inequalities in order to prevent harm from substance use. Nice to see the opposing side of the brain disease model of addiction, which doesn't necessarily offer much in terms of accessible recovery #SSAConf2020
