@SeanDuffyWI Please help #Minnesotans by pulling the plug on the Southwest Light Rail Transit project, officially known as the METRO Green Line Extension (sometimes abbreviated #SWLRT), the transportation rail project in Minnesota that people often joke has been “going on forever.” It’s a major light-rail line extension from Minneapolis to Eden Prairie that has faced years of delays, cost overruns, and controversy before finally nearing completion with service now expected in 2027. The cost of this rail service that no one wants has over doubled in cost since it started.
The same is true with the, METRO Blue Line Extension (Bottineau LRT) which has also doubled in cost since it started.
•It’s a planned light rail transit (LRT) extension of the existing Blue Line running from downtown Minneapolis northwest to Brooklyn Park.
•The project has been in planning and environmental review for over a decade, with shifting timelines and route designs that have contributed to the feeling that it’s been “going on forever.”
•This extension would add about 13.4 miles of track and multiple new stations in North Minneapolis, Robbinsdale, Crystal, and Brooklyn Park.
•After years of planning and design work, final design is ongoing through 2025–2026, with major construction expected to begin around 2027 and service projected around 2030.
You might also hear local discussions about bus and BRT (bus rapid transit) improvements in the area, but the Blue Line Extension is the main long-anticipated rail project tied to Brooklyn Park.
Nobody rides these, and my guess is that if they were looked at closely, you’d find fraud, favors, and payback involved!
We need federal investigations into these and how the money that has spent so far has been spent! It will be appalling. Both of these projects, completely defy, common sense, and prudent spending, and are unwanted projects by the public.

This was mentioned with #SWLRT ... and then developers asked for subsidy to offset the higher land cost. For this to pan out, local elected need to take the political hit and force these higher costs to be negotiated between landowners and developers.
Streetcar could help boost land values, which could draw real estate development.
The former project controls manager for the SWLRT project has filed a lawsuit against the Met Council in Hennepin County.

Admittedly, this is a one-off exchange at a council meeting for the smallest city on the line. But it's nonetheless indicative of an attitude that is the source of so many #swlrt missteps. Communities raise legitimate issues in good faith, and the project office brushes them off.
And yet here we see Alexander breezily telling local electeds -- officials undeniably more in tune with their constituents than he is -- that communities should just accept lower aesthetics from the #swlrt building than they do for private buildings. That's not acceptible.
