Advances in the development of #novel #microscopytechniques allow us to get closer to samples than with classical methods such as conventional #lightmicroscopy or #scanningelectronmicroscopy. #Atomicforcemicroscopy (#AFM) is one of five forms of #scanningprobemicroscopy (#SPM). In general terms, the mechanism involves #scanning a #sample step by step using a physical #probe. This is a raster process in which the object under investigation is captured point by point. The resulting test values are then digitally combined to form a coherent #image. AFM measures #atomicforces on the #nanometer #scale. It is often used to perform #surfacechemicalanalyses. An elastic spring presses a tiny needle (nanomicroscopically fine tip) onto the sample. The #elastic #spring is bent by atomic forces. The changes in the spring's shape are measured using light, allowing the forces acting between the atoms of the surface and the sharp tip to be calculated. The authors K. Bian et al.
