About an urban #semidry #meadow in #Berlin, surrounded like an island by houses and streets, about its #biodiversity in terms of the #plantcommunity and the #insect biodiversity.
Urban green spaces can accommodate a high level of biodiversity, even if it is an area bordered on all sides by buildings and #streets. Especially if it is a #meadow that is allowed to grow so that insects, for example, have the opportunity to end their life cycles on site. As an example, I present a sandy, semi-dry meadow in the #Wedding district of Berlin, which is located at the intersection of Afrikanische Straße and Transvaalstraße. The small piece of meadow is connected to a neighboring meadow, interrupted by only two paths. Both meadows are isolated from other green areas and therefore have an almost island-like character. The meadow was only #mowed in the peripheral areas. The nearest larger green spaces are the parks #Rehberge/ #Goethepark. These have a complex ecological landscape, but are mostly characterized by sandy dry meadows and semi-dry meadows. I assume that the biodiversity in the meadow presented here is in direct exchange with #populations in the two parks mentioned. In general, it is a special feature of Berlin in this respect that the entire city consists of a very narrow mosaic of green spaces, which allows species to spread.
The #composition of a meadow through the different plant species can help to better characterize this #ecosystem. The following plants dominated the meadow: Common #yarrow #Achillea millefolium, St John's wort #Hypericum perforatum, #blueweed #Echium vulgare, common #hollyhock Alcea rosea, greater knapweed Centaurea scabiosa, common sorrel #Rumex #acetosa, tree of heaven bushes #Ailanthus altissima, common toadflax Linaria vulgaris, white campion Silene latifolia, common tansy #Tanacetumvulgare, #rabbitfoot clover Trifolium arvense, common ragwort Jacobaea vulgaris. The order of the species mentioned here follows my list, in which I determined the #plants.
My evidence of #animalbiodiversity in the meadow area examined is limited only to insects, namely those that were easy to find during two simple inspections of the area. The following species were conspicuously present: Orthoptera: Common field grasshopper #Chorthippus brunneus, Italian locust #Calliptamus #italicus. Lepidoptera: Large #white #Pieris brassicae, Burnet companion moth #Euclidia #glyphica. #Hymenoptera: Common #carderbee #Bombus pascuorum, red-tailed #bumblebee Bombus lapidarius, ornate tailed digger wasp Cerceris rybyensis, cuckoo wasp Hedychrum nobile, pantaloon bee #Dasypoda #hirtipes.
I documented the species mentioned photographically during my two afternoon visits to the site in July 2024, The species-rich meadow in the #middleofthecity is an ecosystem, which means of course that the species are interrelated. Plants influence other plants, such as the tree of heaven, which is invasive from China and is known for displacing dry meadows. Animals #interact with plants: I found most #pollinators on common yarrow, blueweed and the greater knapweed. Some plants are food plants for insects or their larvae, such as the rabbitfoot clover for the burnet companion moth, while the greater knapweed is parasitized by gall #wasps. The insects also interact with each other, e.g. the #diggerwasp hunts wild bees as food for their young, while the #cuckoowasp H. nobile targets the digger wasp as its brood host.
I was surprised by the appearance of the #Italianlocust in the middle of the city of Berlin. The species, which is rare in Germany and therefore classified as "very endangered" on the red list, was already known from Berlin, but more commonly from wasteland on the outskirts of the city. However, the species, which is capable of flying well, is more #widespread than I expected.
