A1: I think that by "turning the other cheek", Dr. King is articulating his desire to uphold his ideology that "Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that." #sensemchat
A5: I believe that nonviolence ways to deal with an issue is always the best way to go about an issue. In our world today it seems that in some cases it is impossible to avoid violent conflict, but i think that we need to come together to avoid it as much as possible. #sensemchat
A5: There are no limitations to non-violence such that non-violence "holds that suffering can educate and transform". In this way, education is advancement and therefore non-violence is always an effective ethic for making change. #sensemchat
@olivialeahy I agree, Olivia! A community of hate needs love and non-violence to change and flourish :) #sensemchat
@bellanardis This is such an amazing insight, Bella! I love the idea that non-violence gives and argument legitimacy. #sensemchat
A4: What I found most inspiring about Dr. King's writing is the way he is able to effectively convey power and passion without inciting violence or hate to other groups of people. #sensemchat
A3: While many parts of Dr. King's writing resonate, most prominently applicable today is the "appalling silence of good people" in the constant presence of injustice. Many people, often comfortable in the status quo, remain silent, creating a cycle of social issues. #sensemchat
A1: Dr. King and John Lewis characterize nonviolence as an ethical way to obtain a human’s natural rights. By participating in nonviolence, society is proving that justice can be achieved without violent acts and inhumane behavior. #sensemchat
@CSHSeniorSem A3: In Dr. King's "Letter From Birmingham Jail," the phrase "injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere" (144) connects most to our world today. For example, the Russia-Ukraine war has indirect effects on our nation, though we may not realize it. #sensemchat
@CSHSeniorSem Great discussion everyone! Thank you #sensemchat
Q3: Dr. King's composed approach to such a hateful situation resonates with me, especially amidst the hateful world we live in today. Dr. King's ability to stay true to his overall mission by remaining non-violent but extremely powerful is very inspiring. #sensemchat
@CSHSeniorSem In “Letter from Birmingham Jail,” Dr. King states that "the creation of tension" (146) is one of the most essential parts that makes civil disobedience effective, as it will force an oppressive community to "open the door to negotiation" (146). #sensemchat
A2: Two striking points from the "Eight Elements" document highlight ways in which effective Civil disobedience can take place. Civil disobedience must be "justified by higher[...] principles" and must take place when the law becomes "ineffectual" (Mottolese 1). #sensemchat
Upset I am not in class right now for the #sensemchat but I’m on my way right now! Maybe I can make the end of class🙏
A1: When Dr. King says "turn the other cheek" he is telling people that when someone does something to hurt them, they should be the bigger person and turn the other way. This forces them to make eye contact with the person hurting them and makes them more humane.

A1: Dr. King and John Lewis characterize non-violence quite simply as love. "Turning the other cheek" means to refrain from stooping to the aggressor's level, and not fighting back violently. So, non-violence can ultimately accomplish and spread love. #sensemchat
