🐘 In an update published on 17 October, Tennoji Zoo in Osaka reports that since summer 2026, its three Asian elephants, Kelat, Dara and Amoi, have been allowed to move freely between indoor and outdoor areas overnight, although they remain separated by barriers.
Notably, the zoo acknowledges that Kelat previously spent prolonged periods swaying while confined indoors at night.
Since the change, the zoo reports more varied behaviour, including exploring, pulling up vegetation and interacting with the females through the barrier.
While this is a welcome improvement in the elephants’ freedom of movement, it does not address broader welfare concerns, including inadequate enclosure space and limited opportunities for natural social interaction.
