KNOW ABOUT #SLBM
Proprietary traders are using the National Stock Exchange’s (NSE) stock lending and borrowing mechanism (SLBM) to profit from a pricing anomaly in India’s information technology (IT) heavyweights such as Wipro, HCL Technologies (HCLTech), Infosys and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), whose underlying shares are trading above their futures contracts.
Known as reverse arbitrage, the strategy allows traders to lock in high single- to double-digit annualized gross returns with literally zero market risk, according to market experts.
NSE’s SLBM allows investors to lend shares lying idle in their demat accounts to borrowers for a fee of 3-5% of the share value for periods ranging from one or two months or more. It also allows traders to legitimately short stocks by borrowing them first—the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) does not otherwise permit naked short-selling.
Last week, on July 6, China’s military launched an #SLBM from a nuclear-powered submarine in the South China Sea toward the South #Pacific, marking China’s first publicly known submarine-launched ballistic missile test since 1982. The U.S., Japan, Australia and New Zealand criticized the test and the short notice provided by Beijing. China described it as routine annual training that was not directed against any country.
The missile carried a dummy warhead along a roughly 7,300-kilometer flight path before landing between Nauru and Tonga. There is currently insufficient evidence to determine whether it was a JL-2, whose maximum range is close to that distance, or a JL-3, which can travel more than 12,000 kilometers. The JL-3’s longer range would allow Type 094 and next-generation ballistic-missile submarines to strike targets across the continental United States while remaining in protected waters within the first island chain.
As with the previous test in September 2024, when China launched a likely land-based DF-31 ICBM into the Pacific, Beijing did not follow established international notification procedures, instead providing the United States and several regional states with less than a day’s notice. Such limited warning can complicate efforts to independently determine the missile’s launch point, trajectory and impact area, while also leaving less time to reroute nearby aircraft and vessels away from areas potentially exposed to falling debris. This may indicate an effort to establish such launches as a recurring practice under its own notification standards.

🚀 China’s long-range missile test from a nuclear-powered submarine has raised concerns across the Indo-Pacific. SLBMs are harder to detect and strengthen second-strike capability, making sea-based nuclear deterrence a key strategic issue.

Fittingly given today’s PRC Pacific #SLBM launch news, Appendix A of my new report offers in English translation the excerpt from Admiral Liu Huaqing’s Memoirs in which he offers his own detailed account of #China’s 12 October 1982 JL-1 SLBM test—which he witnessed as PLAN Commander.
“China’s success in test launching an SLBM from underwater, the first of its kind for the country, caused an enormous sensation in the world,” Liu recounted.
“U.S. @NavalInstitute Proceedings made the following comment: ‘When China announced her success in test-firing an SLBM, it has become quite clear that the People’s Republic of China is poised to become the world’s 5th nuclear power to possess a sea-based deterrent force .... China’s acquisition of a deterrent capability at sea complicates strategic force assessments not only for the Soviet Union but also for the United States.”
