How does sociologist tackle contingency in the history? It seems that to find the regularities in human society is supposed to be the goal, but, how (could)?#socofschool
To what extent could an individual's educational "choice" be independent of the social norm and/or the structure of the educational system? Is it worth it? #socofschool
Meyer, Bromly, and Rameriz: I would add a component (control? indicator?). What is the role of textbooks in each of the countries? How do teachers and students generally use them? #socofschool
The Meyer, Bromley, and Rameriz textbook paper is interesting, but I am particularly interested in the questions that follow: Quality of human rights emphasis in texts? Nature of emphasis on human rights in classrooms? #socofschool
Jabbar's (2015) hypothesis that female leaders were less likely to name other schools as competitors was right. What are the implications of this? What does it tell us about female school leadership? What does it tell us about making space for female leaders? #socofschool
In my dream world, school people (administrators, teachers, community members, researchers) work together across school/district/county lines. #socofschool
Jabbar (2015) found that similar schools were not necessarily likely to compete with one another. The exception: schools that were both selective were more likely to be competitive. Which students does this serve? #socofschool
"If all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail." Nevertheless, you do need a hammer in your hand. (After reading Gamoran et al.) #SocofSchool
Some election coverage today talked about the importance of seeing people in office who look like you as a way to signal that you too could run for office and that you are represented in government.

If school choice exacerbates inequality and racial segregation, why do we still pursue it? School choice takes a variety of forms: charter, private, even in-district "choice" programs. How does the research (or its implications) differ among those contexts? #socofschool
Gamoran et al: Interesting that there seems to be no connection between school racial composition and future earnings. What if there's a cutoff point - like a specific racial concentration that does have an effect? Or what if we looked at race and poverty together? #socofschool

The negative impacts of "White Flight" stretch on for generations. Andrews (2002) provides a description of how a social movement can be in response to a variety of ongoing issues. Perhaps we could read it as a map of what to be careful of when making policy? #socofschool
"When social movements directly or indirectly challenge the prevailing structures of inequality, local power holders typically respond by defending existing institutions or by attempting to reconstitute institutional control in new venues" (Andrews et al, 2002) #socofschool
I kinda feel like Gamoran, et al was saying that segregation in schools should change its FB status to "its complicated." #socofschool
Schools are far from the panacea for societal ills and shouldn't be solely tasked with fixing society. But I would be lying if I said I didn't hope schools could be part of a solution when currently they are so clearly part of the problem. #socofschool
Although we are focused on the impact of school factors, we should not ignore the factors at students' home. For example, if the parents are highly learning-oriented, holding high expectation for the kid, it can make a huge difference. Any implications for teachers? #SocofSchool
I really appreciated Catherine Riegle-Crumb's insights on intersectionality in gender inequities in schools. In my experience, bias is experienced differently within groups as well as by groups. #socofschool
Peer groups impact education, but our structure of education impacts peer groups. We can't enforce a Breakfast Club Saturday detention to help students cross their social lines, but maybe a mandatory 80's film fest would help?
Don't you ... forget about me.

"Throughout the twentieth century, the battles against inequality were battles of access... These battles were largely won...The promise of the open society was not just more access but more equality. This promise has proven to be a fiction." (Khan, 2010) #SocofSchool
Is CCSS an instrument to foster the implementation of the accountability system? Or is it a part of the accountability movement? Is it designed to help teachers cope with or become compliant to the accountability system? Or, it's just a "coincidence"? #SocofSchool
